Review "One of the Best 20 New Sports Books in America" --Bleacherreport.com "Plenty of photos and anecdotes will delight Tar Heel fans." --Pam Kelley, Charlotte Observer

"Scott Fowler's 'What it Means to be a Tar Heel' has shot to the top of my top-10." --W.E. Warnock, The Chapel Hill (NC) News Great storytelling.... a must-buy for Carolina fans. --Asheville (NC) Citizen-Times From the Author I wrote "What It Means to be a Tar Heel" over a period of four years -- mostly at night after finishing up my day job as sports columnist for The Charlotte Observer. The idea of the book was to let 42 of UNC's greatest players, as well as Coach Roy Williams, take the floor and answer the central question of the book's title. The book is written in first-person form -- each player details his own experiences at UNC and afterward. I interviewed all the players oneon-one, as well as Coach Williams, and then basically let them talk to you, the reader, as if they are sitting across from you in a coffee shop. The 42 players stretch from 1957 to 2010 -- about 6-7 per decade. Notable former players interviewed include James Worthy, Tyler Hansbrough, Bobby Jones, Walter Davis, Lennie Rosenbluth, Antawn Jamison, Vince Carter, Jeff Lebo, Lennie Rosenbluth, Bob McAdoo, Larry Brown and Phil Ford. The cool thing about it was that no one I asked directly for an interview turned me down -- the UNC family is so tight, and loves to remember those times in Chapel Hill so much, that the players loved to talk about their memories of Carolina and I believe that love shines through in this celebratory book.

From the Back Cover "Carolina is more than just a basketball team. It's a family. It's also a formula. It's special. Coach Smith had a platform at Carolina, but he didn't just use it for basketball. Basketball was just his way to get to people, to make them pay attention." -- James Worthy

"There is a Carolina connection. And not just for the basketball players. You have a connection with everybody who ever went to school there or cheers for the Tar Heels. There's something about the place that just binds people together." -- Tyler Hansbrough

Outstanding By Libby Wilson Great book on Roy Williams and the University of North Carolina Tar Heels and their wonderful basketball program. Beat Duke 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Another NC Treasure By Nancy T. Luckey I thought Scott Fowler had already written the ultimate Carolina Basketball book in North Carolina Tarheels; Where Have You Gone, but this book is a real keeper - one you can read all the way through, or pick your favorites and read about them - What it meant and still means for them to have played basketball for North Carolina, and Scott's update of what the player is doing now. The layout is super. It begins in the fifties and takes each player's feeling for being a part of Tar Heel basketball and puts that feeling into words that only Scott can put together. I didn't know the team started with mostly New Yorkers brought by Frank McGuire to North Carolina. There's also a chapter on a popular Charlotte pastor who was part of the program. Great rainy-day reading! 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.
