Costas Jr. At a time when a major party has nominated someone like Donald Trump (I am a registered independent, this is not a partisan jab), reading such a wonderful work about one of our greatest presidents---if not the greatest---is both inspiring and troubling. How did we get from someone like Washington to someone like Trump? This book---the fourth and final volume of Flexner's work--was written in the early 1970s and, of course, doesn't address my question. But it will make any reader ask himself the same thing. I have also read Freeman's monumental 7-volume biography of Washington and, to me, that is still the gold standard; but Flexner's work is not far behind. It is wonderfully written and researched and really allows the reader to see the world both from Washington's point of view and that of his contemporaries. It is not revisionist or apologist. Washington's second term as president and his retirement are covered in this volume and those were not Washington's best years. After the successes of the first term, Washington could not hold on to the two men that had so much to do with the success of his first administration: Jefferson at the State Department and Hamilton at Treasury. As much as anything about American history, this book can also teach a few things about leadership at the government and corporate level: how to manage subordinates who can be honestly said to be smarter and more brilliant than oneself and still make decisions for the benefit of the whole....and then having to assuage hurt egos to get them to continue their great contributions. To me, that is one of Washington's great achievements. Once Jefferson and Hamilton left and tensions grew between the US and England (its recent war enemy) and France (its recent ally against England), Washington lost some compass and eventually was seen as being more friendly to England than to France. He was never able to find men to match Jefferson's and Hamilton's intellect and abilities, athough he did seek and receive some advice from Hamilton later. Flexner does a great job explaining and showing how Washington was as even-handed and fair as could have been hoped for, but the passions of the times eventually led to his being relentlessly castigated and criticized by the newspapers of the day, some of them directly supported and encouraged by Jefferson. To Washington's credit, hurt and angered as he was by these attacks,
he still thought that maintaining the freedom of the press was essential to democracy. It wasn't until his successor's administration that the Alien and Sedition Acts were passed. Flexner touches on Washington's restless retirement years, his declining mental capabilities, financial struggles as a farmer, his ultimate break with Jefferson, his relationship to slavery and his legacy. While we all would long for men (or women) of Washington's stature and character to occupy the presidency, it is an unfortunately virtual impossibility in modern times. The way our system has evolved, no person of Washington's character and modesty would ever actively campaign (the first few presidents didn't have to "campaign") for the presidency. Unfortunately, these days "good men/women" of good character are getting drowned by bombast and personal attacks and this past primary by the Republican Party illustrated the point perfectly. The electorate has to take responsibility for allowing itself to be manipulated and it would be to everyone's benefit if more people took the time to read a book like this to remember that the presidential office was once held by people for whom character and behaving honorably was paramount. 16 of 16 people found the following review helpful. A majesterial biography By A Customer The last volume of Flexner's 4-volume biography of Washington. The complete set is a wonder. You'll feel you've watched a man struggle with ambition, pride, betrayls and extreme disappointments...and then serve his country magnificently, setting precedents for its future that time has proved almost unfailingly correct. It's not an exaggeration to say that the country's fate rested on his shoulders. When unanimously elected by Congress, he accepted the position of Commander in Chief of the Continental Army. This was before that army existed: he was THE symbol of the cause (and willing to expose himself to British retribution to further it). He could have become king (not so much in title as through use of the powers granted the president) but he consistently refused to abuse the office's powers, leadng to restraint in later presidents (no one before Roosevelt was willing to run for more terms than Washington served, for example). By my count, he single-handedly changed the course of history 5 times through his actions (in his youth, not always deliberately: he unwittingly started the French and Indian War!). At the end of this volume, if you've read the previous three, his death will be wrenching. It a great telling of a great man's life (his "final" act was in his will to free his slaves - of all the Founders, including Jefferson, only Washington took a step so revolutionary - and so true to his ideals) 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. The final volume By Candace Scott This is part four of a four-volume series of George Washington's life and this final installment is the strongest book of all. Flexner's narrative takes the reader up to Washington's last breath and his description of his death is particularly interesting. Despite the fact that there is a plethora of interesting material on Washington's ilness and death, this book brings out facts hitherto unknown. It is reliable and accurate, but one sometimes yearns for a more enlightened and exciting presentation of the earlier years. This is the personification of how history is usually taught: in a manner not designed to capture the reader or the student. One strong point is that Flexner successfully presents a balanced portrait of Washington. Any bias from the author is thankfully masked from the reader. When Washington deserves criticism or censure, the author soberly dispenses it. Praise and plaudits are similarly given. If you are deeply interested in Washington's early years, this is an adequate and trustworthy source. But if you are merely dabbling in Washington and prefer a swifter narrative, then this is not a recommended selection.
