In War Dogs, Rebecca Frankel offers a riveting mix of on-the-ground reporting, her own hands-on experiences in the military working dog world, and a look at the science of dogs' special abilitiesfrom their amazing noses and powerful jaws to their enormous sensitivity to the emotions of their human companions. The history of dogs in the U.S. military is long and rich, from the spirit-lifting mascots of the Civil War to the dogs who lead patrols hunting for IEDs today. Frankel interviewed not only handlers who deployed with dogs in wars from Vietnam to Iraq but also top military commanders, K-9 program managers, combat-trained therapists who brought dogs into war zones as part of a preemptive measure to stave off PTSD, and veterinary technicians stationed in Bagram. She makes a passionate case for maintaining a robust war-dog force. In a post-9/11 world rife with terrorist threats, nothing is more effective than a bomb-sniffing dog and his handler. With a compelling cast of humans and animals, this moving book is a must-listen for all dog loversmilitary and otherwise. ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

By N. Wallach This is a book that examines the almost symbiotic relationship between dogs and humans by applying to it a filter of the use of dogs in combat. It further focuses in by relating stories and anecdotes from the U.S. perspective over the past decade in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. If you are a dog lover, or have had dogs as part of your household and as pets, then the stories that the author tells will have you shaking your head in agreement as you recognize the same traits that your dog had with the ones that she tells stories about. There are ten chapters in this book and each covers a slightly different aspect of the overall theme that the author is exploring. Each chapter roves around and between stories of dogs and handlers in current wars, historical anecdotes of dogs of the wars past and how they fared, and scientific facts sprinkled in and around to illustrate the points even better. For instance, did you know that the average dog's nose has over 15o million scent receptors while human noses have many millions less? No surprise there to anyone who interacted with dogs, right? But how about a factoid thrown in to a different chapter that the Bloodhounds have over 300 million? These factoids are sprinkled here, there, and everywhere throughout the book and help illustrate the points that the author is making. In the center of the book is a section of about eight pages showing black and white photos of the dogs and people whose stories are in the book. This helps us visualize the people and dogs that are featured, but it did lead me to want more: more photos of the people and dogs; and more photos sprinkled through the text where those people and dogs are mentioned. Also, there are various historical tangents strewn about probably intended to illustrate various points although there is an emphasis on the writing of the British officer who was the first to discuss the training of war dogs during World War 1. Included amongst these tangents, one will find the obligatory discussion of how dogs evolved from wolves to become dogs and interact with people. The fundamental interaction between dogs and people is deemed to be trust, but this author goes so far as to speak of their direct connections as a form of love similar to that shared by all combat personnel who ultimately are fighting for their buddies next to them, rather than grand concepts of honor or patriotism. Again, referring back to the interactions between people and dogs in other environments than war leads to the direct correlation of the stories told here with what the dog lover experiences with his or her pooch. I really enjoyed reading this book because I focused on the training and capabilities of the amazing dogs. Yes, several of them die or get wounded as the stories unfold. But then, so do some of their human handlers. There are heartwarming stories woven through the text as well as emotionally raw stories, and stories that brought tears to my eyes. It is a good collection and an interesting exposition of the topic. If you are a dog lover, or want to understand how dogs contribute in combat, you will take away a lot from this book which I recommend. 13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. wonderful journalistic account of the dogs of war By E. Van Der Scratchy As a dog lover and a military spouse this book is right up my alley. The book is very well written for my taste, the author tells the stories of the dogs and their handlers like the journalist she is. The book does not rely on melodrama, you get the facts and the stories and your emotions are allowed to come from your understanding rather than being manipulated out of you. I enjoy military history and find it interesting, and the short story/article format gives you some interesting historical detail

without turning into a history book. One of the stories in the book which really moved me was the description of a Marine whose unit had just suffered heavy casualties holding tight to the unit's dog and just sobbing. We got our own dog during a time of crisis in our family, and I have cried my heart out while hugging him more than once. I think this is a universal theme of our relationship with dogs and it really spoke to me. If you finish the book and still want more, or want to check out a sample of the author's work, she has a Facebook page I have started following, Rebecca's War Dog of the Week. If this book left you wanting more insight into the human and canine heart, the Fiction book The Suspect by Crais is a good one. 7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. "exceptionally interesting and surprisingly moving" By RF Wozniak I think Jonathan Yardley of the Washington Post put it best when he described Frankel's book as "exceptionally interesting and surprisingly moving." I couldn't agree more. A fantastic look at human and animal relationships as they play out and evolve on an individual basis and in the context of warfare. As someone who has difficulty finding time to read, I could not put this down. Frankel combines history, present-day journalism and emotional storytelling to create a tremendously compelling book. I highly recommend this book and will be looking out for more work by Rebecca Frankel in the future! See all 110 customer reviews...
