Do you want to get an answer for the question posed in the book’s title? Go straight to page 185. There, you’ll get half a dozen pages or so that basically say something along the lines of, “Serial killers are scary fun, kind of like a roller coaster or a haunted house.” What’s the rest of about? Kind of hard to say. The first section seems to be about debunking serial killer myths. Unfortunately, these are really only myths if all you know about serial killers is what you’ve seen on TV and the movies. The next section seems to be simply relating the author’s correspondence with two famous serial killers, Son of Sam and the BTK killer, who are currently behind bars. Up next is a turgid sociological exposition about what serial killers “mean.” Next is a rather journalistic piece on murderabilia, the trafficking of items related to serial killers. Finally, we return to the turgid sociology. It’s like the book was written by someone with multiple personality order. None of it hangs together at all. I also thought many of the ideas were not very well fleshed out. For example, the part about why we love serial killers basically is off the cuff, with maybe a quote or two from some cop or FBI guy. Finally, the writing tends to be very clunky. Just as an example of that pretty much every chapter begins with a “In this chapter, I look at …” and ends with a section that starts “In this chapter, I examined …” Overall, it reminded me of an undergraduate who doesn’t have that much to say and is being especially wordy trying to get their paper to the minimum number of pages. I am totally perplexed why this thing has gotten so many 5-star reviews. You can’t all be friends of

I Admit That I Love Serial Killers By Jason Korbus If the topic of serial killers interests you, and you love feeding your brain with well-researched and thoughtfully conveyed information, I think you'll enjoy Dr. Scott Bonn's "Why We Love Serial Killers" as much as I did. If you go by the title alone, you may expect the majority of the book is spent answering the question of why we love serial killers. That's not necessarily true. There is a lot of important information that leads to those conclusions in later chapters, and while some readers may find that disappointing, I actually don't think that is a bad thing at all. Let me explain why. Personally, while I am certainly one who "loves" serial killers, and enjoys discussing elements of their crimes with friends and family who share similar interests, there was much about this book I found both fascinating and new to me. I learned a lot about the statistics of serial homicide, for example, and how many more of these murders are committed by minorities and women than I previously expected. Bonn also lays out an intriguing hypothesis about why media gives much more airtime to the white male serial killer over others. Furthermore, with 20 pages of popular myths about these specific kinds of criminals debunked, you will learn, for instance, that serial killers are not all dysfunctional loners, that many do have families, and yes, sometimes they do stop killing on their own. Reading about how these myths came to be, as well as how they have been perpetuated, was extremely enlightening. Something you will get in this book that you won't find in others are reports of the personal correspondence the author had with the "Son of Sam" David Berkowitz, and BTK himself, Dennis Rader. Bonn is able to examine these men up close and personal, and analyze them from a criminologist's perspective. What you'll get here are insights into the criminal mind that are typically unique to experts in serial homicide. In other words, you'll find out a little more about what makes the serial murderer tick, without having to sit across from them yourself. The true crime nerd in me was also pleased to get a solid treatment on "profiling," with an honest assessment of how useful (or even non-useful) it can be. It was also a nice treat to read about the sociological implications of serial murder itself, and how the reporting of these crimes affects society, as well as our own personal sense of well being. As I mentioned earlier in this review, the reader should not go into this book with the expectation that it is all centered around the statement in the title. However, I think you will find that much of the particular information in the build-up is meaningful to better understanding the author's conclusions. Only speaking for myself, I was satisfied with the reasons Bonn concludes that so many of us love serial killers, and could easily relate the answers to my own experiences. All in all, I believe that if you are interested in true crime, and particularly fascinated by infamous names like Ted Bundy, Jack the Ripper, and Richard Ramirez, you will find a lot in this book that you will enjoy. Not only will your knowledge and understanding of the criminal mind be deepened, but you may also even gain a little personal insight into yourself as you determine just why you, like so many us, love serial killers. 18 of 24 people found the following review helpful.

Dangerous Balderdash By Claudia J. Hill This book was written from a long outdated view of society, one discredited for more than a hundred years. His concluding chapter, in which he claims that serial killers are actually necessary to society, is dead wrong. Serial killers are as necessary to human society as cancer is to the human body. And, I'm sorry, but there is such a thing as evil that can be recognized and rejected by any human being. Furthermore, the author often mentions "grizzly crimes" and "grizzly public recognition." The only grizzly that ever attained much public recognition that I know of was Gentle Ben, the bear who starred in the movie and television show of the same name. It is, however, sadly true that the crimes of serial killers were indeed horrible and undeniably "grisly." A small point, possibly, but, it certainly casts doubt upon the author's research skills.
