Great art, great story, but a little foggy on the details... By Jamie
If you're a fan of writers who don't like spelling things out super-clearly then you will probably love this series. There is a lot of hinting and implying going on with very little actual black and white confirmation of events OR origins for that matter. That's not to say that this isn't an enjoyable read (with fantastic art), just a bit of a foggy one. The story it tells is interesting; we're lead in one direction and then given a nice twist. I kept expecting a certain something to happen but when it finally did, it came from a direction I wasn't expecting, which is great. We learn where Wolverine comes from in terms of his history and lineage and we learn why his own past is such a mystery to him, but again a lot of this is only implied without being stated directly, meaning two different people could interpret his history two different ways. Sometimes that works, but it's hard to pull off flawlessly and I'm not sure this one was pulled off like the writer intended. Maybe it was, but at the end I found myself going to the official Marvel Wiki to see if it cleared up some of the foggier areas for me. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good Origin Story By SLIMJIM Among the X-Men, the Wolverine fascinates me the most. There’s something about that character that intrigues me. I thoroughly enjoyed this story of Wolverine written by Paul Jenkins. He has written a good storyline of Wolverine’s origin. The graphic novel actually pulls you to the character. There is some suspense in the beginning of the book as you don’t know which one of the character is going to grow up to be the Wolverine. I thought it was neat to see how the story was told from a third story perspective of a girl who was a nanny. This adds a personal touch while still allowing Wolverine to be the elusive figure that one can’t fully control which I think would be destroyed if it was told in the first person. The author and illustrator did a good job with the historical details of the Canadian setting in the 1800s. The colors of the painting in this book is beautifully done—especially the sunlight that makes you feel like you are in the Canadian frontiers. I have read other X-Men comics recently and I thought that this book was really well done in comparison to others. In the beginning of my recent reading of comics and graphic novels I thought there was not much difference but this work is an example of a graphic novel. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good mini-series By SBD This was a very good mini-series when it originally came out. I am glad I was able to get it again with this hard cover collected edition. The story is good and gives insight into the last 30 odd years of Wolverine comics and why Logan is the way he is. The art is fantastic. What could be better? Most characters in this story are one dimensional, just devices to move the story along. See all 12 customer reviews...
