0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Forgotten Gem Brought To Light By Tomsde This long forgotten Shirley Jackson book is a gem that should never have gone out of print. It's great that Penguin has brought it back. It's hard to characterize what The Sundial is--it straddles the line somewhere between a character study and a horror story. You'll find a ghost, psychic phenomenon and a cast of peculiar characters. You can see elements of the story in Jackson's later, more highly praised book, We Have Always Lived in the Castle. If you try to analyze it too much you won't enjoy it--just go with the flow of the story and get out of it what you can. I'm sure a whole book could be written about it's psychological over-tones and metaphors. Unfortunately the Hallorans are a very likeable group of people and one would wonder why, they would be the "chosen ones" or if they were the only "chosen" in it's twisted pre-apocalyptic/survivalist plot. If you thought this sort of thing is new--it was going on even in Jackson's day. As a Jackson fan I highly recommend it. 26 of 29 people found the following review helpful. A "must" for Shirley Jackson fans! By A Customer Why is Shirley Jackson so often miscast as a horror writer? "Sundial" is a rich, tapestried, multilayered work by an enormously versatile author. Those new to Ms. Jackson will be mesmerized by her characterizations, rich narrative, and subtle, unnerving detail. Those familiar with her work will recognize in "Sundial" the "undercurrent of desperation" found in her best stories, supernatural elements a la "Hill House," the complexity of "Bird's Nest," the quirkiness of "We Have Always Lived in the Castle," and the wit (and laugh-out-loud humor) of "Life Among the Savages." "Sundial" succeeds on so many levels that a cursory summarization would be an injustice to the book. I myself am going to cogitate on its existential aspects; that is, a group of people who grate on each other forced to spend their lives together (Sartre's "No Exit"). As the character of the schoolteacher says, "This is a real real real real real real real real adventure!" Mrs. Halloran Orders Her Crown By steven lowenthal Difficult to classify, rather a behavioral comedy with eerie passages, and a treat for Jackson fans; bizarre logic on a wealthy estate, where we meet these characters, drawn fairly easy-to-picture: haughty spinster Aunt Fanny, having had a revelation; others including her hated sister-in-law buying into her dire prophecy out of self-interest. Some of these are colorful, some not, and perhaps one little heiress seems to me a bit too observant and full-spoken for her age, but oh well then. Deadpan treatment of confusion and fear, as expected, promising deeper things from this author... and without my spoiling anything - it becomes a whodunnit at a most surprising point in the story! Pleasantly wicked. I would like to see someone try writing and directing a screenplay of THE SUNDIAL - for starters, the Hallorans' relationship with their beloved, doomed townspeople, and the farewell party, are a satiric delight.
