It touches on NUMEROUS people in the Modern Spiritualism movement of the mid 1850's to 1870's also including what part the author took. Sometimes amusing, sometimes dazzling, and sometimes chilling. Emma Hardinge Britten takes 20 years of history and supplies a spiritual landscape of the time from documents, magazines long out of print, and personal account of the pros and cons of the movement. Mrs. Britten herself talks about her own medium ship, and her views on her gift. There are discussions on the validity of other mediums, and how some felt uncomfortable charging for their gift, while others, having a gift, resorted to using fraudulent techniques and then publicly confessed. She also discusses her interaction with the Fox sisters, and their impact on Spiritualism. The book is huge, but it can be read in small pieces. Each piece of history is either a couple paragraphs, or a couple pages. One chapter maybe 15 pages long, but the people or recounts of
activities are numerous. Some of the accounts documented here are chilling. The description of the footsteps passing through the Fox sisters home to the stairs leading down to the basement will stick with me for years to come. There is also the story of the artist, when blindfolded, would draw family portraits. When finished, the families he drew would point out people he drew that were long deceased family members the artist had never met or known. He would also draw people in the portraits that were still born children that the families never told the artist about. Chilling! Pulled from documents and articles of it's day, it is assembled and gives a full overall history of the period. Some of the sources are no longer available and this book is an invaluable reference source. Possibly one of the best books on this topic ever written. *****UPDATE DECEMBER 2011****** I didn't realize it has been almost 5 months since I began reading this huge, huge book! And what I have learned about the Modern Spiritualism movement! I have about 200 more pages to go. I got busy there for awhile and didn't have much time, but I've been reading again. In quite a large part of the book the print is very, very small. Ms. Britten quotes and uses alot of excerpts from Spiritualist papers of the time such as "The Spiritual Telegraph" Although The Fox Sisters are credited for the birth of the Spiritualism movement, Emma Hardinge Britten brings forth many, many more people who held a heavy influence. For example, in Athens County, Ohio, the Koons and Tippie families built spirit rooms. People traveled for hundreds of miles and stayed for free at the farms to visit the spirit rooms. The Tippie and Koons families did not accept a single penny for room and board, and after 6 years, left the area to take the message of spiritualism on the road. But, in these rooms, a spirit called King 1, King2, King3 and other spirits spoke though a trumpet. There was unearthly singing, and strange, beautiful music played on instruments as they swirled about the rooms. The sound could be heard up to a mile away from each spirit room, which sat three miles apart. There were cold, luminous hands and super fast sessions of automatic writing. King 1 would even expose people who tried to conceal their identities. Eventually, the families were driven from their farms from non believers, the children beaten, and crops damaged. The book talks of different people, sometimes mentioning them in several paragraphs up to whole chapters. It documents her travels through the American countryside and her encounters with Spiritualists in small towns such as a frightening doctor in Meadville, Pennsylvania. She discusses the truth in Spiritualism, and of the frauds in Spiritualism. At one point in the history, it was popular for the fraudulent mediums to publicly "confess" their forgeries. But, she is also quick to point out that not all were forgeries. And that's when her stories get scary, and she proves, in my opinion, that the stories she is telling are true. There was unexplained spirit activity and unexplained documented accounts along with the forgery cases. She also points out that most of the people who criticize Spiritualism have not witnessed, or investigated it, they are just spouting an opinion not based in fact.
The high point of the book so far is a drawing by Nahum Koons explaining Spiritualism and it's different levels and it's relationship to God. It's on page 330- 331. See all 1 customer reviews...
