Robinson gives the reader an appreciation for the man behind "Little Caesar" and "Key Largo"'s "Johnny Rocco." A stage actor at heart, he only gives praise for very few of his films, only giving some of his most famous films passing words and references of his b-pictures with dread. He made most of them while criticizing the Hollywood assembly-line craftsmanship. He came from Rumania with his family and grew up with dreams on being a great stage actor and reminisces of working Joseph Schildkraut, Jr. (the actor) and Sr. (the play director.) He was a very high-minded person with high standards, expecting much of himself and others. A very well-read person of all the newspapers of the time, he speaks here with big words you may have to look up in the dictionary to understand his meaning. He does come across a bit stuffy and/or haughty or as an old man in his ways, but he was his own man, who depended on no one but himself - that fact, giving more more of an ego. He does admit at one time to being a ham, to a degree. But his professionalism earned him much admiration and love from his peers. He speaks of his unfortunate dealing with the HUAC and how it affected his career. But in the end, his various performances of men from all walks of life earned him an Honorary Oscar, of which he was told while he was dying. He did in fact die prior to the Oscars, even though he wanted desperately to be there to accept it. A man of culture, he had amassed a huge "collection" of Titian, Degas and other great artists. I use the quotes for the benefit of those who know why. While serious-minded, his coauthor Leonard Spielgass remembers him with a sense of humor. A welll-rounded man who took himself and his work seriously, he tried to work constantly, despite his ill health in his later years. But if you're looking for a nostalgic look of his movies, his coworkers, and how great fun his moviemaking was, you won't find much here. He does mention a few actresses he worked with or met by chance, such as Marlene Dietrich and Greta Garbo, when she came to his house. And, he goes into detail about his stage career and high society life with some uppercrust people. Some of this part does get a bit tedious and uninteresting to me, unfortunately. Instead of reminiscing about movies like "Our Vines Have Tender Grapes" and "Double Indemnity," which got a line each, he relates of his youth struggling in Rumania, getting to America, his life with Gladys, his first wife, who had mental problems and his lack of communication with Manny,,his son. If you are looking for a glimpse of the real Edward G. Robinson and not his movies, then you'll be blessed to see a glimmer of this gentleman of the past. They were rare then and are gone today.

I read All My Yesterdays as a teenager and learned a great deal from it. Edward G. Robinson was a very cultured man and participated in many things in his life. Very well written. I remember he told about things going on in the world, around WWII, and the movie/theater business. Wasn't narsistic or teachy or opinionated, but a thoughtful sharing of his experiences. It was a pleasure to read. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Listen Up You Mugs! By JCN Fantastic autobiography. He writes the way you remember him talking. Great memories of NYC theater in the 1920's and 30's. He glosses over a great many of his best film parts (Double Indemnity is but a fleeting mention). He often gets sidetracked by interesting asides that takes the book out of chronological order, for which he always apologizes. It gives the book a very conversational feel. I guess he died while writing the book because it ends in the mid 50's. After the accusations of communism but before his divorce from Gladys. Co-author Leonard Spigelgass picks up the story and gives the reader a quick summary of those remaining years. The heart wrenching dissolution of his painting collection during the divorce battles. Mary Price touches on this as well in her bio of father Vincent Price. Seems Gladys was out for blood and wanted only to hurt her former spouse. It's just a shame that EGR died too soon and was unable to speak to us of his happiness in his new partner, Jane. It would be amazing if a museum put together the 40 paintings from his famous MOMA show. It would be great to see his treasures together and fathom what he saw in all of them. Great musings of a great actor, art lover and intellect. See all 9 customer reviews...
