METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH IN CANADA. In the fall of 1828 our conference sat in Madison. Indiana, October 9th. This was the only annual conference that I ever missed attending in fifty years. My wife was sorely afflicted, and was supposed to be at the gates of death, so that I did not think it my duty to leave her, though a kind Providence spared her to me a little longer, and she still lives. I was reappointed to the Illinois District. The Oneida Annual Conference was formed at the General Conference in May, 1828. This made nine annual conferences east, and eight west of the mountains. They had a membership in the nine Eastern conferences of 270,210. In the East there were of traveling preachers 984. We had in the West, of traveling preachers, 519. Of members the West had 150,894. Total number of members, 421,104; of traveling preachers, 1,503. The New-Hampshire and Vermont Conference was formed in the interim, or between the General Conferences of 1828 and 1832. It will also be remembered that Canada had existed as a separate annual conference, and was in union, as a conference, with the Methodist Episcopal Church in these United States, and was regularly supplied with American preachers, and superintended by our American bishops. Being under the British laws, that established the Catholic Church in Lower Canada, and the Church of England in Upper Canada, our people, members, and preachers labored under many civil disabilities. They thought, under all the circumstances, that it would l e better to be separated from the Methodist Episcopal Church in these United States, and organized into a distinct Methodist Episcopal Church in Canada; elect from among themselves a bishop, that should be resident among them; and thereby avoid many of those disabilities that had fallen ... ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

Phaneuf Aside from the fact that this is a great buy (only $10), this book is an excellent resource for anyone interested in early Methodist or frontier religion and/or life on the frontier. Spanning more than 50 years of ministry in the first half of the 19th century, Peter Cartwright's autobiography provides a colorful, though sometimes biased, look at early Methodism. Descriptions of campmeetings, conversions, encounters with "rowdies", and worship practices abound. Cartwright's ministry covered Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, and Illinois. Local preacher, circuit rider, and district superintendent, Cartwright was a leading figure in the Methodist Episcopal Church. In Illinois he was also a politician, and the only man to have defeated Abraham Lincoln in an election. Cartwright provides insight (and opinions) into other denominations as well as social issues of the day, such as slavery and dissolution of the Union. Edited by the late Charles L. Wallis, a notable Methodist clergyman and prolific author/editor, there is also a brief biographical/historical sketch and information from Cartwright's later ministry. A wild man truned fearless preacher By A Customer A historical autobiography ending just before the Civil War, this book tells the story of a man who was saved by God from a life of gambling and wickedness to become one of the great circuit riding preachers of his day. Fearless and uncompromising, his experiences in the wilds of the American frontier and in the old camp meetings are interesting and sometimes downright funny. While he is rather biased toward the Methodist way of doing things, his keen observations on various things ranging from Joseph Smith, whom he met, to the events preceding the Civil War, as well as everyday life, make good reading to say the least. There are somewhat wordy passages, but the stories of various incidents more than make up for them. Recommended. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A look at an earlier time on our country's religion By Clifton C. Cartwright Being a Cartwright, I have always heard of Peter Cartwright, but this was a real eye opener into the history of our country and its religion in the first half of the 19th century. It was difficult to read, being an autobiography and a copy of the old book. The print was the most difficult part of the read. Peter Cartwright's writing was amazingly modern and easier than some old writings I have read. His trials are an inspiration for any young preacher who has it "modern and easy" to preach the gospel.
