Twitchell This book is a well researched history of the Pinkertons. It seems to objectively report bad times as well as good. This country had no national police force until the early 1900's. The Pinkertons filled the need for a national and international data base and even helped set up the FBI's data collection. Good detective stories and plenty of back ground on the Pinkertons' development of many of the methods they worked out to fight crime. These methods are still used today. I purchased to book because I watched a movie about the nation's first train robbery and how the Pinkertons tracked down the Reno brothers, the first of several family gangs. The movie was about average but the Pinkertons handling of the case was an eye-opener. None of this was in my American history classes, high school or college. The history books jump from carpet baggers to a small mention of the Spanish-American war and then to World War 1 and the roaring 20's. This book fills in many of the historical gaps from the Civil War to the 1960's. It also shows the links between the robber barons of the late 1800's and the Pinkertons. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. critical to understanding the development of American law enforcement By Nazani "Alan Pinkerton was an important leader in the Underground Railroad, protected President Lincoln, and was General McClellan's chief of espionage during the Civil War. Pinkerton pioneered many techniques of forensics and undercover operations. With his sons, he helped track down and capture bank robbers in the Wild West and captured the New Orleans Mafia leaders in the 1890s. The Pinkertons' role in the development of labor organizations is also well documented, as they were often hired by industrialists to interfere with unions. 564 pages. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. James D. Horan is a novelist and historian who has written 24 books on a wide variety of subjects, from the American Revolution to New York city power politics. Before his retirement he was an editor for the `NY Journal-American'. Horan spent many years in researching this book which includes material never before revealed, released, or examined. The term "private eye" is derived from the sign used by the Pinkerton National Detective Agency. They were involved in many dramatic events in American life from the 1850s to the 1920s. This 564 page book is divided into eleven books and 41 chapters, a `Foreword', `Notes' `Bibliography' and `Index'. You won't find "Swenson, Martin" in the Index. The `Foreword' tells about American history that is not in the schoolbooks. The Draft Riots in New York city saw about one thousand people killed and thousands injured. The police were helpless until the army restored order. The following decades saw violent strikes from the 1880s to the 1920s. There was intense nationalism and prejudice against immigrants. Crime was a national threat in almost every large American city from the 1860s to about 1920. [And no later?] Gunmen fought daylight battles in city streets. Witnesses were too terrorized to testify. Organized crime was so powerful that gangsters got jury lists before the courts! The Mafia controlled the waterfront of New Orleans, along with vice. Later they took over the limestone quarries of Pennsylvania. The Pinkertons created a "Rogues Gallery" for the Identification Bureaus. Their techniques and methods influenced modern state and federal police throughout the world. [No mention of their use by European Secret Police?] This book is the first complete documented history of the Agency. The stories here would seem like fiction if they were not true. Of course, there is another side to some of these conflicts than is told in this book. Why did this Agency diminish after the 1920s? Its called "socialization". The banks, railroads, and express companies paid for their protection from their earnings. If a Government Detective Agency performed these tasks their costs would be much lower because everyone's taxes would pay for it.
