Brininstool were still alive when his book first appeared in a shortened version in 1925. It has long been recognized as classic Custeriana. More incisively than many later writers, Brininstool considers the causes of Custer's defeat and questions the alleged cowardice of Major Marcus A. Reno. His exciting reenactment of the Battle of the Little Big Horn sets up the reader for a series of turns by its stars and supporting and bit players. Besides the boy general with the golden locks, they include Captain Frederick W. Benteen, the scouts Lieutenant Charles A. Varnum and "Lonesome Charley" Reynolds, the trumpeter John Martin, officers and troopers in the ranks who miraculously escaped death, the only surviving surgeon and the captain of the steamboat that carried the wounded away, the newspaperman who spread the news to the world, and many others.

Profiles in Courage during the Wild West's Greatest Battle By Charles Lewis It's a shame that this fine book has not been reviewed here already, because "Troopers with Custer" is one of the finest early volumes on the subject of the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Now long since overshadowed by dozens of more recent popular accounts, and no shortage of highly
specialized and specific studies of the battle, "Troopers" remains an excellent book and is often cited as a source in other works. While it deals heavily with the 7th Cavalry soldiers under the commands of Reno and Benteen, it's still a very good overview of the battle, highlighting numerous incidents of valor and profiles in courage of "warriors" on both sides. It is written in a very unbiased way and tells much about the stories surrounding the great battle and what everyone else was doing at the time of the battle from people that were actually there.
