Jungle fighting By John E. Larsen The 9th Australian Division was the most famous of Australia’s WW2 combat formations due to its epic battles against the Africa Corps at Tobruk and Alamain. While it concluded its war in the 1945 Borneo Campaign, this book covers its least known operation, the Huon Peninsula in New Guinea. The early fighting in New Guinea was fought by other Australian formations. The 9ths turn came in September 1943. Starting at Scarlet Beach, to capture Finschhafen, the division advanced to Satttelberg and then Sio. They faced unexpected numbers of Japanese troops, which launched strong offensives. They then dug in and forced the 9th Division to clear them out from a succession of defensive positions. The fighting was hard and casualties were significant. Tropical illnesses in particular taking a terrible toll. Supply was difficult and there were command problems at times.
Even so, the 9th persevered and won through in a very difficult campaign, demonstrating its exceptional quality. As said, the 9th was very highly regarded. Coates explains why, by examining the events and personalities that shaped it in the desert. This core of experienced soldiers and leaders, combined with jungle training (and earlier actions at Lae), gave it a real edge. This was most fortunate, as the division suffered misfortune in a bungled landing. An overly complicated relationship with US amphibious forces and poor execution on the night put many troops of the 20th Brigade in the wrong places. The Japanese were in greater strength than predicted by MacArthur’s command and significant reserves were available. Given that every battle against the Japanese seemed to finish in Allied victory it is easy to think that they were mismatched in these fights. The truth is that the Japanese were very much in the fight and only their own mistakes and Australian resilience saved the day. They were also able to strongly contest many of the subsequent actions, forcing the process to take much longer and be more costly than necessary. All of this is conveyed in detail by the author. It is also done through the eyes of both commanders and the men who fought the Japanese, often virtually face to face. There are many quotes and passages from participants to give the narrative immediacy and sometimes tension. Problems and errors are not glossed over either. Some battalions struggled to accomplish their missions. Some commanders made poor decisions. The Australian artillery for example fired on its own men at least 20 times. Such things happen in jungle fighting but this is a very detailed account of the fight. There is also the enigma that is Douglas MacArthur. While authoring the massive CARTWHEEL series of operations that progressively captured key places and turned the Japanese inside out, he did this with a blinkered command structure that launched under-prepared operations and failed to reinforce them. The Japanese forces were consistently underestimated and the far removed command structure allowed key opportunities to be lost. This particularly applied to the US 32nd Division at Saidor which inexplicably failed to cut off thousands of retreating Japanese troops. While fortune generally smiled on MacArthur, his unforced errors put many others unnecessarily into situations of great peril. So this book is very informative. It examines what is now a little known battle in a largely forgotten time and theatre. It is fascinating to learn of the make-up of the 9th Division and see how it handled its new combat environment and enemy. The challenges were immense and the initial outcome a near run thing.
