BRAHMIN PROPHET: PHILLIPS BROOKS AND THE PATH OF LIBERAL PROTESTANTISM BY GILLIS J. HARP PDF

The Reverend Phillips Brooks, author of the beloved Christmas Carol, O Little Town of Bethlehem, was undeniably one of the most popular preachers of Gilded Age America. However, very few critical studies of his life and work exist. In this insightful book, Gillis J. Harp places Brooks's religious thought in its proper historical, cultural, and ecclesiastical contexts while clarifying the sources of Brooks's inspiration. The result is a fuller, richer portrait of this luminous figure and of this transitional era in American protestantism. ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

Most helpful customer reviews 1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Fair, courteous, scholarly but unsympathetic study By Dr. John Bunyan The short Preface of this book clearly sets out its character. It is not primarily a biography but a very scholarly exploration of the theology and thinking of the Episcopalian Phillips Brooks, mainly as Rector of Trinity Church, Boston (briefly Bishop of Massachusetts) although general biographical details are included. It is a rather stolid account, but written clearly, and with extensive and useful notes. Its thesis can be found, put far more briefly, in the author's "A Once and Former Evangelical : Phillips Brooks : A Cautionary Tale" in Touchstone : A Journal of Mere Christianity. The author is a conservative evangelical Anglican, fair to his subject but unsympathetic. The main points I should make are these. 1. It would have been helpful to have provided early on some explanation of what is meant by "Romanticism" especially in relation to 19th century religion. 2. The author assumes throughout the validity of conservative evangelical beliefs, without investigating at all deeply why so many came to discard them. For example, he assumes (p.121) "humanity's abject inability" - presumably to do good of itself which everyday observation would seem to contradict. Conservative evangelicals in their arguments often, I think, beg the questions ! 3. The links drawn to much later liberal Christianity and the changes made between Brooks' time and our own are only lightly, over simplistically sketched, and not always accurately. For example, (p.211) John Hick did not relegate the category of Incarnation to that of "fable" . Hick edited a book, The Myth of God Incarnate ("myth" used in a technical rather than popular sense), but gave his own book the title "The Metaphor of God Incarnate" (SCM 1993). The story of doctrinal developments in the Episcopal Church and the Church of England is much more complex that this work suggests. Making some particular points, I find there is little or no reference to earlier high church elements in Anglican tradition. Again, not all would accept a narrowly Anselmian interpretation of the Prayer Book Communion (p..178) and after a long campaign, in the Church of England subscription to every thing in the 39 Articles had been replaced by a never legally defined general "assent" in 1865 - and as far as I remember, that subscription was not required in the Protestant Episcopal Church. It is true that in the 21st century conservative evangelical and "charismatic" influences have become stronger, and mainline liberal churches in many cases weaker - with liberal churchmen and women drifting away or being deterred from attendance (as in my own at present large, wealthy, and often neo-Puritan Diocese of Sydney). But conservative and fundamentalist forms of religions are also flourishing in Judaism, Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism and at the other extreme, aggressive, intolerant, and aggressive atheism is prominent. This

present phenomenon may say more about the troubled state of the world and the fears of many than anything about what is reasonable and true. Fortunately, there is still much thoughtful and moderate and - in the best sense - liberal thinking in the Anglican and other mainline Churches as in the other religions. Brooks himself was in his day a great preacher, but he was not a very clear thinker nor really a scholar. The books of his sermons would be read now by few but the writings, for example, of a fellow broad churchman, Dean Arthur Stanley, remain of value, and the writings - and in his case, the courageous, active witness for truth and justice - of Bishop John William Colenso of Natal surpass them both. I noticed Mr Harp's book because as well as being an Australian Episcopalian priest, I have long been a member of King's Chapel, Boston, with an interest in Boston's ecclesiastical history. He does not mention King's but he does mention James Freeman Clarke (and many other people of interest), Minister of that (formerly Episcopalian) unitarian Christian church (better described today as ecumenical and liberal Christian), and indeed I wondered if the reference on p.17 to "the neoclassical stone church on Tremont Street" really referred not to S.Paul's (now the cathedral) but to nearby King's Chapel which for some time after the Revolution was called the "Stone Chapel". When I first encountered it in about 1980, some of the old "Brahmin" character of Boston survived! Mr Harp's work adds something to our understanding of late 19th century liberal protestantism even though some aspects of it, notably its complacency and optimistic faith in progress were to be shattered not long after by the coming of the Great War. Most, however, I think will turn to broader and more comprehensive studies than we find here. 0 of 2 people found the following review helpful.
