WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE: MANHUNTS FROM GERONIMO TO BIN LADEN BY BENJAMIN RUNKLE PDF

Early May 2011, in a dramatic late-night appearance at the White House, President Obama declared that "justice has been done" as he announced that Osama bin Laden was dead. After more than a decade of military operations across Central Asia and the Middle East, the Al Qaida leader who orchestrated the 9/11 terrorist attacks was finally killed in a firefight with U.S. Navy SEALs in Pakistan. Although this daring raid marked the end of the longest strategic manhunt in American history, bin Laden was not the first individual targeted as the objective of a military campaign. From Geronimo to Pancho Villa, to Manuel Noriega, to Saddam Hussein, the United States has deployed military forces to kill or capture a single person nearly a dozen times since 1885. Part military history, part action thriller, and part strategic policy analysis, Wanted Dead or Alive chronicles the extraordinary efforts of the military and intelligence agencies to bring America's enemies to justice.

Runkle Superb Storyteller By Isreal Potter Yes, Ben Runkle has a PhD from Harvard, but he doesn't write like an academic. Intelligent and insightful: Yes. But what made me really enjoy this book was the way Runkle makes the history of U.S. Manhunts come alive with great portrayals of the larger than life heroes and villians that grace his pages. Impeccable research is one thing, and that is all here in full; but the art of turning "History" into an insightful page-turner is what makes Runkle top shelf material on the level of say a David Hackett-Fischer. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Must Read! By John Antal Some books must be on your bookshelf and this is one of them. Ben Runkle's book, "Wanted Dead or Alive: Manhunts from Geronimo to Bin Laden," is a superb read and a perfect primer to understanding counter-terrorist warfare. Ben is a Soldier, academic and author who provides valuable insights into one of the most important issues of our time - how to counter trans-national terrorism by striking at the head of the snake. This book explains with clarity and precision the story of our past manhunts and how hard it was to find and target some of America's most notorious enemies - Geronimo, Emilio Aguinaldo, Pancho Villa, Manuel Noriega, Saddam Hussein, Abu Musab al-Zaqawi and Osama bin Laden. This book should be read by anyone interested in national security, war and international relations in the 21st Century. Most importantly, it is a vital read for the informed citizen. Review by: Colonel John Antal, US Army (Re.t), military historian, author and military affairs expert. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. "Wanted Dead or Alive" book review. By F. Socha Having a son in "Special Forces" and an interest in military and western history this book was a must read for me. Stories of the Apache campaign, Pancho Villa, Noriega, Bin Laden and others were very interesting. Gives you a clear understanding of some of the things our troops go through to get the job done.
