Considering it's iconic status as one of the most famous warplanes of the 20th century, I'm genuinely surprised that Haynes has taken so long to publish a book on the Sopwith Camel. This entry in the Owners' Workshop Manual series is slightly different from earlier titles, focusing on color photographs of modern replicas and original piloting notes and technical documents. The photographs are definitely the highlight of this manual. Think the "Squadron/Signal Walkaround" series, but focusing on the inner workings of the aircraft. There are dozens of excellent color photographs showing modern high-fidelity Camel replicas in varying states of completion, often showing multiple angles of the same component. There are closeups of control cables, views of the pilot's seat being woven, wing ribs being formed, brackets and turnbuckles, bracing wires, throttle and fuel valves...you get the picture. All really good stuff. There are a number of original documents included, which make for fascinating but rather esoteric reading. We get Air Board technical notes on the Clerget and Monosoupape engines, flying and fighting advice from WWI Royal Air Corp officers, and short "training manuals" focusing on care and maintenance, workshop organization, how to rig the aircraft, and cleaning and maintaining the Vickers machine guns. Considering how simple the Camel appears on the outside, I'm genuinely surprised at how complex they truly were sans their fabric coverings. There are a couple of large-scale model kits depicting the Camel "naked," and I'd recommend this book to anyone thinking about building one. That said, it's still a little rough around the edges. The first chapter is largely padding, and focuses more on the creation of the Royal Air Force, than on the development and service history of the Camel itself. Although the photographs are superb, the text in the "Restoration to Flight" and "Anatomy" chapters is rather sparse. As a result, we get an excellent visual study of the Camel, but a rather sketchy understanding of how everything fit together. Thankfully, the technical notes, an excellent hands-on account by TVAL pilot Gene DeMarco, and a handy glossary of period aeronautical terms largely make up for this deficiency. Although it does assume a good deal of prior knowledge from the reader, this book would certainly make an excellent addition to the library of any classic aviation buff. See all 4 customer reviews...
