It is a very well presented, concise description of the Patient Presentation model of medical school curriculum -- it's purpose, structure and intended outcomes. The introductory chapter includes a brief history of the legacy of the 1910 Flexner Report. Subsequent chapters provide good examples of integrated biomedical science concepts that underly common patient presentations that physicians encounter. The text is focused on a reading audience of first year medical students who -- presumably -- are enrolled in a traditional, biomedical science discipline-based curriculum. As such, its message consists of suggestions to the learner on how to rearrange the content s/he is learning into the more medical-student-
centered organization that is useful for the tasks s/he will be expected to perform as a 3rd year clerk. Unfortunately, this seem a bit misguided -- The intended audience should be faculty who need to recognize the value of the Patient Presentation approach to pre-clerkship education and to redesign this segment of physician training to target authentic physician-related tasks. I can only speculate that the author has encountered resistance to this proposal from faculty, and has therefore decided to create a resource for students to accomplish that goal on their own.
