Davis Emil Bock offers rich and insightful analysis of the the life of Christ jesus. If you have read or are interested in the Gospels and have not read his work, you have not understood the inner depth and significance of their content. This is a must read for anyone who is serious about a relationship with the Christ. 1 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Not enough information By Ashtar Command "The Three Years" is a life of Christ written by Emil Bock, who was a leading member of the Christian Community, a group connected to Rudolf Steiner's Anthroposophical Society. The book was originally published in Germany in 1946. In contrast to other Theosophically-derived movements, Anthroposophy places heavy emphasis on the person of Jesus. Bock's book describes Jesus' life from the baptism in Jordan to the Ascension. It's surprisingly "literal", since the author believes in miracles, demonic possession, and the resurrection. Unsurprisingly, Bock puts an Anthroposophical spin on the Gospels. While Jesus was a human being, Christ (or rather the Christ or the Christ being) was a solar spirit which incarnated in Jesus at the baptism in Jordan. The author is therefore a kind of adoptionist. He further claims that the incarnation was gradual: at first, Christ only incarnated in the ego of Jesus. Later, Christ also took over Jesus' astral body (it was the astral body which the disciples saw walking on water). The resurrection took the incarnation one step further: Christ now took over the physical body as well, and somehow united it with the spiritual body of Jesus. Thus, the resurrected Jesus was a spiritbeing, but with the ability to freely materialize in physical form, as when he showed himself to Thomas. The other Gospel miracles are explained in similar weird fashion. Lazarus was an "initiate of the mysteries", which somehow explains why Jesus could resurrect him. When Lazarus was resuscitated, his initiation was completed, and he became John the Beloved. At the same time, the spirit of John the Baptist entered him! Galilee is said to be enveloped in some kind of ancient solar energy, which explains why Jesus could recruit so many disciples there. Apparently, they were clairvoyant. And so on! What amused me somewhat, is that Bock (despite seeing all kinds of mystery religion parallels in the Gospel stories) is oblivious to some other passages that must have an allegorical significance. For instance, why is the robber named Jesus Barabbas? The Church Fathers wondered about this, quite rightly, since the name means "Jesus Son of the Father". And the real Jesus was, of course, the Son of God the Father. Another example, this time taken from a modern New Age book, is the constant references to fish in the Gospels, the Christ monogram ICHTYS and the fish symbol of early Christianity. Could this have some kind of astrological meaning? Didn't the Age of Pisces start around the time Jesus was born? It's humorous that the author missed this, but perhaps his mentor Steiner didn't saw it either, or didn't care.
"The Three Years" isn't a particularly interesting book, and doesn't contain the most sensational Anthroposophical ideas about Jesus. I therefore only give it two stars. See all 4 customer reviews...
