The New & Revised Bible By Trevor Burnham Countless players (myself included) have been made into competent tournament Texas Hold'em players by the classic Harrington on Hold'em books. A decade later, Harrington has updated those classic works for today's tournament scene and condensed the result into a single, all-new volume. Actually, Harrington on Modern Tournament Poker is more of a sequel than a revision: It's organized differently (more on that later), and it's dropped some of the early sections that made it approachable to true beginners. This is an intermediate book, one you'll get the most out of after playing a tournament or two and wondering, "What went wrong?" The original Harrington books were a gentle introduction in part because common techniques like
bluffing and slow-playing were relegated to the second volume, so that the first could focus purely on making reasonable value bets. The new Harrington is broken down instead into the different phases of a hand: pre-flop, the flop, the turn, and the river. At first, this structure is a bit jarring, but it has the advantage that it allows you to look up any scenario you've experienced and find Harrington's answer. "Should I have called my opponent's bet on the turn?" "Should I have led out on the river?" A concluding section contrasts Harrington's prescribed style of play (tight but imaginative) with the now-ubiquitous LAG style, and offers some basic recommendations for playing against the LAG players you've identified at your table. Page-for-page, this may be the most valuable section of the book. Unfortunately, it's very short and doesn't cover ever situation. Still, this is a truly great poker book that should satisfy the many players who've been waiting to sink their teeth into a more advanced volume that maintains the virtues of the Harrington on Hold'em series: readable prose, well-explained reasoning, and a plethora of useful example hands. Large If you own the previous Harrington classics (Vols 1-2& 3 of Harrington on Tournament Poker) this tome is certainly a must buy. As usual, the writing is crisp, concise and loaded with information and advice. As the title says, "Modern" tournament poker. Updates previous books with the emphasis on how the tournament poker games have changed, from small buy-in to mega buy ins, so much more aggressive and hand ranges much wider. Actually liked the writing here vs. pervious Harrington books, as it is easier to understand and more to the point, with excellent examples in every section. You won't read it in one, or even 10 sittings, but you will be a better player once you have re-read it a couple of times. Harrington does it again By Joshua First of all, I would like to say that this is one of the best books ever written on tournament poker. I have read nearly several dozen poker books and this one is at the top of the list for more proficient use of information, as well as the sheer amount of thought that went into writing it. Harrington gets the job done again with sound advice, how to size your preflop bets in what stages of the tournaments and according to the blinds, how to play a big stack as well as a short stack, playing the flop, the turn, and the river, and even choosing when to bluff or value bet on any given street. You will get your money's worth and see your play improve dramatically in tournaments to the point that you are consistently making the money and accumulating chips as Harrington advised. I used to play for money in daily online tournaments and I am not a professional at the game, but I know what Harrington is saying and have used his techniques to make final tables and win hundreds of dollars. Although Harrington covers some of the ideas already covered in the original series, it is a must read for the aspiring tournament player and the pro alike. For example, the plan of having the short
stacks covered if you plan to raise and setting them all in if they come over the top when you are pot committed. This can be good or bad, all depending on which hand you raised and from what position, and a lot more factors that come into play. The point is that Harrington writes a book that lets you see things that the average player does not see when he plays a tournament, and what the pros capitalize on to make final tables.
