By a physicist In this book, Dr. Thorne painstakingly explains what are the well-established science and what are the speculations behind the movie Interstellar. The movie is very long, and contains a lot of things --- and in places it was a little bit puzzling. This book takes us back to the movie, and explains to us the many aspects of science that this movie touched on, including: the biology and geophysics behind the dooms-day scenario at the beginning of the movie, the astrophysics and gravitational physics of black holes, the science of planets, and the (very wild) scientific speculations on wormholes and quantum gravity. I watched the movie together with a group of physicists and astronomers; afterwards, we had a lively debate about whether many details in the movie was really plausible, as Dr. Thorne had promised to us previously. After reading this book, I can see that Dr. Thorne had (of course!) realized most of the problems that we were debating. In places when astrophysics or planetary science were involved, Dr. Thorne provided the (sometimes very unlikely but nevertheless possible) scenarios that our difficulties might be resolved. In places involving speculations in fundamental gravitational and quantum physics, Dr. Thorne provided motivations from the frontiers of theoretical physics. It was great fun to read these details. Finally, this book reveals the untold story in the movie: it all started from the detection of gravitational waves!!! 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The book is BETTER than the movie! By Vlad Vanek The book is BETTER than the movie! I studied general relativity so it was pretty understandable. Yet the movie effects are really good ONLY when near "Gargantua" - the black hole, based on photon ray tracing through local spacetime. Actually I read the book AFTER seeing the movie then I watched the movie again AFTER I finished the book. As usual, space radiation effects are TOTALLY neglected - a typical Hollywood nonsense. However, then all characters would die BEFORE they get to Saturn, and there would be no movie! All OK, interesting, yet the description of "back in time motion" at the end of the movie just "sucks" - in the movie! The "theory of quantum gravity" is essentially total baloney. I happen to subscribe to a theory that the gravity is caused by
a conservation of local spacetime DURING a mass particle creation from energetic photon. In this way the spacetime conservation / dilation and photon momentum conservation, and total energy conservation are responsible for local curvature AND created particle mass. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A very good story, too By Steve D. Very readable without mastering the intricate math that goes with this kind of science. A very good story, too, about how this all came to happen and how and where the film makers had to compromise the science for the sake of story telling and when they hewed to the science more closely. And you learn quite a bit of science in the course of the book. You get a pretty solid update on the status of relativism in the early 21st century. Thorne is an obvious and unapologetic Einstein fan, so you get an enthusiastic argument for his undeniable brilliance as the guy who unlocked all of this, assuming Thorne and others are smart enough to figure it out.
