POWERED BY PLANTS: NATURAL SELECTION & HUMAN NUTRITION BY DON MATESZ PDF

In June 2011, Don Matesz surprised and enraged some of the followers of his “paleo” and lowcarbohydrate diet blog with his "Farewell to Paleo" post wherein he detailed both evidence-based and personal reasons for abandoning the meat-based diet. By August of 2014, this post had more than 100,000 page views. In September 2011, Matesz presented a talk – "Ancestral Nutrition: An Alternative Approach" – at the first ever Ancestral Health Symposium at UCLA. That lecture focused on identifying physiological evidence for human nutritional adaptations to either plantbased or animal-based diet and it evolved into this book. Powered By Plants refutes the "paleolithic diet" claim that meat-eating uniquely drove human evolution by reviewing the abundant evidence that a plant-based diet powered human evolution. Challenging anthropologists and advocates of low-carbohydrate and 'paleo' diets who claim that paleolithic meat-eating made us human, Matesz shows that we have numerous heritable anatomical, physiological, and biochemical features primarily adapted to acquisition, digestion, or metabolism of whole plant foods, but lack the heritable features expected as evidence of evolution dependent upon and primarily driven by meat consumption. Powered By Plants surveys human biology from head-to-toe, and, backed by hundreds of references, shows that our sensory, locomotive, manual, digestive, and reproductive systems, and our nutrient metabolism, all have features primarily adapted to a whole foods plantbased diet. ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

Without question, this is one of the most well researched books on the topic of evolutionary nutrition, containing hundreds of high quality relevant references. Throughout this book Don Matesz critically examines many of the claims published in peer reviewed journals by prominent proponents of the so-called Paleo diet. Matesz ultimately concludes that the hypothesis brought forward by these proponents that humans evolved and thrived on a predominantly meat based diet is over-simplistic and is in disagreement with a broad spectrum of evidence. Matesz demonstrates this by examining dozens of factors that cast doubt on the hypothesis that Paleolithic humans were the successful hunters that these proponents have made them out to be. For example, Matesz points out the relatively low hunting success rate and low energy return from hunting by modern African hunter-gatherers, casting doubt on whether Paleolithic humans who used more primitive weapons would have had a greater rate of success. Another important point raised is the known high rate of dehydration and hyperthermia among modern day athletes running long distances in warm climates despite being supplied with water throughout their races, suggesting that Paleolithic humans living in warm African climates who had fewer reliable sources of water would have unlikely relied on persistence hunting to provide any significant portion of their diet. In this book, Matesz also examines the natural occurring pathogens found in animal foods, demonstrating that these are found in similar quantities in both intensively farmed livestock and wild game, and provides a significant amount of evidence for their role in human disease. This book is an essential read for anyone interested in evolutionary nutrition, and highly recommended for anyone interested in health in general. 10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Five Stars, Highly Reccommended! By A. Brooke If you are interested in human health and nutrition, or human dietary evolution, or current dietary choices, or plant based diets, then you will find this a valuable and fascinating addition to your library. It is a gold mine of quality references, recent research results, intriguing facts, ingenious arguments, and surprising insights, all the more interesting because the author has long experience with both sides of the nutrition debate. I was particularly interested in the discussions of the expensive tissue hypothesis, the B12 debate, the amylase production levels, cooked food vs raw, vitamin C, which I had already studied, and found his presentations exemplary. Highly recommended! 6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Dense, thickly polemical, but plausibly argued case against obligate carnivorism By Todd I. Stark This is a very impressively detailed polemical account of human evolutionary history that attempts to show from various lines of evidence why humans are not obligate carnivores. From the start the author anticipates resistance to the idea, so much so that the book begins with an extended diatribe about his thinking regarding cultural brainwashing, complete with a reference to Nazi Germany. He lays it on quite thick from the starting gate, which I think somewhat defeats his own purpose because it is exactly the sort of writing that makes people defensive rather than engages them in a new way of thinking. The author reminds me strongly of an ex-smoker who has become a fanatical anti-smoker. I can relate to that to some degree because I've found much of the argumentation in popular books regarding carbohydrate restriction and high fat diets to be exaggerated and often very selectively supported. I think he does a better job than most of those once he gets to the details of his arguments. Rhetorical criticism aside, I think he does a very good job engaging various lines of evidence,

finding and meeting some of the better anticipated arguments against his thinking, and ultimately making a persuasive biological case that human beings do not need to eat other animals in order to thrive. It's a bit dense and I don't think he is an expert in all of the fields he reviews, so there is a lot of potential for technical obfuscation here requires domain expertise to sort out but he mostly seems to make a plausible case to me. After all, the case he really needs to make in order to make his point is not really a "best diet" case but a case against obligate carnivorism. He does seemingly assume that the case against meat eating being neccessary for health automatically implies that meat eating itself is non-optimal for health, but it isn't his primary focus with this book, it is more like an artifact for him that happens to agree with his own adverse experience with a meat-based diet. He reviews data supporting the health merits of veganism, but it is by far not as strong as his central argument against obligate carnivorism. The bulk of his evidence seems to be consistent with the "eat mostly plants" consensus of most health and obesity researchers, but he also adds some additional thinking in support of not eating meat at all, consistent with Campbell's interpretation of the China Study data for example. Allowing for its polemical excesses in places (especially the beginning), and the varying strength of his different arguments, I think this book is a notable and worthy effort to at least critically engage the cultural fashion for high fat and meat-centric "paleo" style dietary strategies and show instead the flexibility of human omnivorism and the possible health tradeoffs of eating meat.
