Good Concept/Story, Unnecessarily Graphic By Amazon Customer The basic premise behind the story, namely being able to "sleeve" your "real self" (your soul? your consciousness?) into different physical bodies makes for all kinds of interesting possibilities in a science fiction story. It also raises some more profound philosophical questions about what it means to be human, but these are only touched on rather than pursued in depth. The story is basically a murder mystery, set in this future world. I found the story itself to be engaging and wellwritten. Readers should know however that the violence and sexuality in the story are over the top explicit. There is a detailed description of a woman (actually the main character, who is a man, in a woman's body) being tortured in ways that are sexually graphic, and there are two sexual encounters that are described in such graphic detail that I felt like I was watching a hard-core porn film as I was reading. Also I felt like the book in general has a somewhat degrading view of women, and these scenes in particular seem to me to dehumanize women to a certain degree. I don't object to sexuality being a part of the storyline as sexuality is very much a part of real life, but I personally felt these scenes were graphic and lurid in a way that distracted from the story rather than helping it along. Buyers should be aware before they purchase in case this sort of thing isn't what you're wanting in a book. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Amazing Sci-Fi Noir Story By The Choosy Moose Wow, I was not expecting the book to be this good when I bought it. I typically have lower standards for books on Kindle Daily Deals due to the some of the offerings I see and the lower prices, but this book was amazing sci-fi/noir mystery. The writing was great and the whole story flowed very well to an exciting conclusion. This is a pretty long book in a very good way, I couldn't believe how much the author managed to fit in. The sci-fi concepts behind the book were also very interesting, had never read about concepts like this before. Definitely seems like a very realistic dystopian future in some ways and really makes you appreciate something as simple as human mortality. Background: I typically buy my Kindle books as part of the Kindle Daily Deals and plan them for airplane reading or times when I am away from home and cannot do more exciting or responsible
tasks. This means that my standards are not too high and I am looking for books in the beach read category under the fantasy/sci-fi genres. I give this book a lot of credit, it does a great job of developing a unique universe with great detail. Sure, it may go into the weeds at times explaining in painful detail something that may or may not end up being relevant, but I’d rather have that than an author spending less time on world building. Where I take a little exception is in the outrageous price increase from the 1st book ($1.99 through a bookhub deal) to the 2nd book at $11.99. Is the 1st book worth more than $1.99? YES! I’d pay the “high-end” kindle pricing of $5.99 for it. It is that good. But trying to pass this off at hardcover prices ($11.99) is just insulting.
