Interesting insights about the man By Fritz I bought this to learn something about the surprising (to me anyway) Republican presidential candidate. I didn't want to read a recent "campaign" book, but something written a while ago. This book was written in 1987, so I thought it might serve. From a literary standpoint, the book makes rather clumsy use of a "frame" consisting of the first and last chapters which talk about Trump's calendar for a given week. Read them if you like, but they don't add much. The rest of the book is much better. It tells about Trump's life as an immigrant boy, learning the building trade at his father's side, going into the business on his own, and making it big. I'm writing this in the 2016 election frenzy, so I realize my comment will be a whisper on a scream, at best. If you love Trump, read this to get some insights into his thought processes. They are methodical, logical and profoundly risk-averse. If you hate Trump, read this book for the same reason. He may not be your political ideal, (he is certainly not mine), but he is by no means the devil some paint him to be. 18 of 21 people found the following review helpful. In his own words... By Amazon Customer I bought this book upon the recommendation of Newt Grengrich. People are unsure of what to think of Donald Trump as the media and other public outlets are usually ignorant and misleading. I believe this comes from having a pre-conceived idea of Trump, and then picking from his extensive publicity to back up that viewpoint. Hence, people sway wildly from one perception to another. Oddly enough, my overwhelming perception of Trump's book, over any other, is that his thinking is scientific. In all his chapters, his modus operandi is to have no judgement until he has gathered enough information, and to always gather first hand information. To do basic direct research before passing judgement is the domain of the true scientist, and seems to be something totally missing in both critics and fans alike of Donald Trump. For example, was Trump's treatment of poor tenants justified? Perhaps; a significant portion, perhaps the majority, of poor tenants are incapable of civilized behavior, including but not limited
to, hygiene, drugs, lack of basic up keep of their domicile, unruly children, crime, skipping out of rent, and other actions deemed uncivilized. Trump learned quickly and early on that poor people are extremely difficult to handle as a slum lord (he exited the business in his teens). --Was his treatment of tenants in rent-controlled apartments justified? I would say no even though he operated within the limits of the law. However, the tenants were paying something like $400 per month, and found it cheaper to hire lawyers to stall for time, and reporters to inform, over paying fair market price for their apartments. --Did he pay off politicians and public servants? Yes, and he has stated that is the price of business (he estimated 10% of his income went to bribes) in getting things done. The machinations of politicians playing fast and loose with money and resources they are stewards of is a real eye opener. --Why so many casinos? Casinos are responsible for the vast majority of dollars generated by the hospitality industry, and Trump was attracted to the fantastic incentives put forth by both the banking industry and local government to build these basically parasitical attractions. The sheer dollars sunk into these magnificent structures is mind boggling, and in hindsight responsible for a large portion of public and private debt. For example, his Atlantic casino went bankrupt twice, cost over a billion dollars, and both banks and the city went into "leverage" to build these. --There are two tiers of service: the service industry, whether it is construction, banking, or what not, basically operates using the cheapest and worst possible service that they can get away with, and excellent service for a select few that have repeat business with. In short, a fine concrete launch pad worthy of a space shuttle launch, and watered-down crumbling foundation for the rest of us. --Persistent allegations of racism and sexism. I did not find anything to suggest either of those throughout his book. --Nationalism: now this is interesting because in his book we can see his fledging proto Nationalism manifesting in his preference to take care of his family, his workers, and finally his social group. In many ways you can see him not rushing to judgment until the facts come in, and not just throwing someone away because of bad press. --His end around the status quo: his attempt to create an alternative football league ended in complete failure and great loss of money. And it came down to just one thing (not mentioned in his book)...people were basically satisfied with the NFL, and so there wasn't any strong incentive to change. After this abject failure, Trump would always endeavor to only enter fights where people were dissatisfied with the present service (airlines, his Republican election) because he learned quite well that without need then there is no change. Anyway, I hope this review helps you. I gave this review three stars because the book is full of minor factual errors concerning dates and times. This is expected of a memoir that strongly suggests it was written off the cuff and transcribed verbally. Nevertheless, I highly recommend this book. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Engaging book By Axel de La Soujeole This book is very easy to read. I found it hard to put down. I was less interested in the chapter on the USFL. But I am not a fan of professional sports. I would have enjoyed more of a look into his married life before Ivana. However, since this is a personal matter, no one has any right to it. It is just that without this information, the data being less complete, the character is less
