By LTC LDD Having seen all of the James Bond movies (and knowing that several were done after the death of Ian Fleming), the Spectre Trilogy was something of a surprise. These stories were some of the first

in the movie series (all starring Sean Connery). All focus on Bond's battle with the nefarious Blofeld, the diabolical genius set on building an underground empire of evil that essentially would control the world. Thunderball allows the reader to see James Bond on a more personal basis, without the dashing looks of Connery. Fleming develops Bond with flaws and strengths, making him more human and more believable than the character Connery portrays. Still, the events in the original novel are followed almost exactly in the movie -- which is a tribute to the strength of Fleming's original story and the character of Bond. On Her Majesty's Secret Service - here we see further development of the Bond character, suave and sophisticated when he has to be, but preferring to be somewhat sloven on his own. That's a little different from the screen character. Events in the book again are pretty much followed by the film, but there are some liberties in the movie. Nevertheless, Fleming's 007 remains much as we have come to know him - intelligent, resourceful, daring, with a passion for attractive women. You Only Live Twice will be a shock to readers. Only minimal scraps from the novel found their way onto the Silver Screen. In the novel, we see Bond as impatient, impertinent, even somewhat arrogant - quite a change from the Connery 007. True, the story is set in Japan, and Tiger Tanaka is Bond's mentor, but the movie departs from Fleming's novel very quickly. In the original tale, Bond is sent on a near hopeless mission, perhaps his last as a 00 agent because he has become undependable, distracted, and a drunkard - see the end of On Her Majesty's Secret Service to find out what sent him into this self-destructive spiral. During Bond's mission in Japan, he finds Blofeld in a new endeavor and sets out to bring an end - once and for all - to the former leader of SPECTRE. Fleming's original story is much more complex - and more personal - than the one played out on the big screen; in many ways, it is superior to the film version. I think you will enjoy all three; just remember that the novels came before the movies, and these are Fleming's portrayal of Agent 007, James Bond, unsung hero of the British Empire. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Bond vs. Blofeld By Jeanne Tassotto This is a collection of the novels (THUNDERBALL, ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE, YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE) involving Bond's battles against SPECTRE. THUNDERBALL - The world is being threatened by a new organization - SPECTRE - which is claiming that a nuclear device will be detonated unless a ransom is paid. Agents are dispatched throughout the world to locate and eliminate this terrorist threat with Bond being sent to the Bahamas. ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE - Weary of chasing Blofeld Bond is ready to leave the Secret Service and make a new life for himself. He has even found someone to share it with. Is this the end? I think two of the stories, Thunderball & You Only Live Twice are some of his best, along with From Russia With Love and Dr. No. If you enjoy Bond, the original, this is a nice addition to your collection.
