This overlooked event (won by Great Britain) helped lead to the magnificent biennial competition that ... By William R. Case Aficionados of UK courses and Ryder Cup history will relish " 'Jewel in the Glen' - Gleneagles, Golf & the Ryder Cup, author Ed Hodge's homage to Scotland's transcendent hotel and golf resort. Written in the aftermath of the European side's astonishing comeback victory contested at Gleneagles' Centenary Course in the 2012 Ryder Cup, Hodge's coffee table offering skillfully links the Cup's recent history as well as its origins to Gleneagles. British and American teams first locked horns over the resort's King's Course in 1921. Golf legends Walter Hagen, Jock Hutchison, Harry Vardon, James Braid, and J.H. Taylor were among the competitors. This overlooked event (won by Great Britain) helped lead to the magnificent biennial competition that captivates the golf world today. Hodge traces the history of Gleneagles from its beginnings as a grand railroad hotel, through James Braid's rapid (but flawless) layout of the King's and Queen's courses in 1913 and ultimately Jack Nicklaus's early 90's design of the Monarch's Course (now the Centenary). The book culminates in a riveting account of the 2012 Ryder Cup complete with color photographs that hurdle the great battle right into the reader's living room. Early images of Braid, the hotel, and various tournaments held in the '20s provide a visual treat that won't be found elsewhere. Most of the game's greats have found their way to Gleneagles' moorland fairways, and Hodge interviewed many of them including Nicklaus, Palmer, Player, and Trevino. They each shared fond memories of this Perthshire treasure. Gary gushed that "Gleneagles is one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited." As a lifelong resident of Auchterarder, Hodge was witness to many important competitions in his youth including the European Tour's Bell's Scottish Open and the Scottish PGA. Giants like Ballasteros, Faldo, and Norman teed it up on the King's and Monarch's in these events. The King's also played host to a made-for-television pro-celebrity event. Race car driver Jackie Stewart played in one of the matches and recalls with delight holing a 45 foot putt in his match with Bing Crosby. Apparently Der Bingle was not overly pleased with Jackie's magical stroke. American readers will find Hodge's Scottish perspective on Ryder Cup golf enlightening. "Jewel" provides thumbnail sketches of all the Scottish golfers who have been members of the Ryder Cup teams. An understanding is also gained of how hosting the event provided a significant boon to the Perthshire economy as well as that of the hotel. But even absent any connection to the Cup, Gleneagles would still be, as Hodge asserts, an icon of Scottish golf and "the best and most fashionable golfing venue in Scotland." 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
