An enjoyable read. By Shirley Quinones I enjoyed this story although there's much to be said about Lily and Cliff. The concept behind the story was interesting and although the author, Rebecca Rogers Maher, did a great job in its execution I can't help but point out my disappointment with the characters.
Don't get me wrong, Lily and Cliff were perfect for each other, but personally, I didn't like them one bit. They were too negative and their opinions and ramblings just made me want to smack them upside the head. I found myself muttering "Such is Life!" and "OMG, get over it!" more than once throughout the story. Having said that, the story was enjoyable and the romance was very good. The characters, although insufferable at times, did have great chemistry and when these two got together?! Phew, they were HOT! Those scenes I thoroughly enjoyed. I did find that the pace dragged a bit in places, especially when Lily or Cliff went on and on and on and on about ALL that's wrong with the world, but that's just my take on it. I don't particularly see the half glass empty most of the time, so that might have something to do with it. In any case, Hurricane Lily was engaging and entertaining. I wanted to find out what what happened to Lily and Cliff to make them think and act as they did and although I understood some of their issues, there were still some things that were unclear. Even though Lily and Cliff had chemistry in spades I don't believe that their pairing will last long, not unless they put some work into it. I didn't get the feeling that they were ready for any kind of emotional connection. All in all, Hurricane Lily was a short, sexy read with characters that even with annoying personalities managed to keep me interested in the outcome of their story. Real (Steamy) People By Amazon Customer Cliff is a contractor and Lily is the woman who has hired him to fortify her rickety old house against the elements. At first sight, Lily seems like yet another wealthy tourist type looking down on him and his work, and Cliff seems like a self-righteous blue collar guy writing her off as shallow and phony because of her family's money. Intriguing as he may be, Lily can't open up to Cliff and show him he's wrong about her because the reason she's hired him in the first place is to shut out everything -- and everyone. She needs a strong house so she can withdraw completely from life, and once the builders are finished their work, she'll be able to close herself in and retreat into agoraphobia, with enough money from her distant father to keep the groceries coming in and the the whole world away. Luckily, she is not entirely closed off yet, and their provocative exchanges disguise an attraction powerful enough to overcome Cliff's resentments, Lily's phobias, and their own better judgement. Just because these two belong with each other doesn't mean all their problems simply disappear. Their passions may bring them together, but they still have to overcome all the barriers that protect them not only from the hurtful past, but from their own possibility for happiness. And Lily and Cliff together are sexy enough to steam up all those new storm windows!
Not just their attractions, but ALL their emotions are powerful stuff, so their story is 50% escapism + 50% realism, which makes their relationship feel 100% earned. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I tried. By lindz I tried to get into this book, but sadly only managed 35%. There was just no plot beyond angsty longings for someone they hate and childish attempts at politics. This doesn't make a for a good read. If their ages hadn't been said in the book, I would have guessed the characters were about 17-19 from their incredibly immature views on politics and the state of the world. The characters were insufferable and I just wasn't able to get past their ramblings to see if there were any compelling aspects of the book. There is just so many times I can read "F THE MAN" before eyerolling ensues. See all 10 customer reviews...
