Review "It is exciting when a book comes along in the mental health field that both changes the way we think about our work and can be immediately applied to our work in a practical way, and Andrew Bein’s book does just that! As a mindfulness-oriented therapist in a busy university counseling center, I am excited to start using this book in my work with clients, and I know it will be a resource I will turn to again and again." —Ronni Arensberg, Psy.D., LP,Licensed Psychologist,North Dakota State University Counseling Center "Dr. Bein skillfully brings DBT, essential mindfulness practices, and skills-building to the everyday world of therapists and clients. Brown This book was written for therapists, but in simple enough language that it is accessible to mental health care consumers. It does presuppose a familiarity with DBT but it’s not necessary to use the book; Dr. Bein explains things well enough to get through it even if one has never been exposed to DBT or similar therapies. Bein’s version combines the therapy of DBT with a philosophy of mindfulness similar to Buddhism and other spiritual paths, which offers great help in emotional regulation. This mindfulness teaches the client to not judge themselves or their thoughts & emotions, but to simply observe the emotions as they occur and take the time to decide how (and if) to act on them. It also teaches that thoughts & emotions are just that: they are not truths. The client does not have to react to the thought because it is not the truth. It can be ignored. This method also teaches the clinician that they don’t get to be the one to set the goals for the client. Rather than striving to make the client compliant in taking his meds and showing up for group reliably, the client gets to set the goals. Does the client want to live on their own? What will they have to change to do that? Do they want to have a job? What do they have to do to manage that? The clinician has to accept the client, not remake them into a good little success story. The first part of the book talks about the therapy and how it works. Chapter 6, however, is a set of 15 lessons and activities for the clinician and client to work through. They seem to be clearly written and I believe they could be used by a client on their own if they do not have access to a clinician using this system. I think this is a great system and a great book and I hope it becomes popular. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Good book but I still prefer the Dijk and Pedersen books By K. Salinger, Holistic Nurse Practitioner I have found that DBT is useful for most any and every person both with and without mental health issues. I especially like to use it with my clients who have anxiety, bipolar, PTSD; but most everyone if you investigate even superficially never really learned good coping skills - it's just not something commonly taught. DBT is amazing for teaching coping skills and this book would be esp. good if working with a recovery client.
This book is easy to read and as you'd expect by the title, is geared towards recovery. However, it isn't so narrowly focused that it can't be used for other dx as well. This author puts more emphasis on wise mind than many others and I like his method for doing so. I am incorporating some of this style into my own DBT style I use with clients. It's a good book, but I must admit I'm still very partial to my Dijk DBT Made Simple: A Step-by-Step Guide to Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Pedersen The Expanded Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Training Manual: Practical DBT for Self-Help, and Individual & Group Treatment Settings books. Dijk truly does "make it simple" and it is so easy to apply it to anxiety, stress, worry, negative thinking, black and white thinking, etc. I like her use of "limits" vs. "boundaries" and have adopted that term for myself. I find that her writing style and methods make it easy for individuals to "get it" and not feel overwhelmed by the whole process. I have also attended one of her intensive 2 day seminars, so it is possible that because of that it seems a very clear, simple guide. However, The Pedersen book I like, you could actually have a reasonably intelligent client read it directly (if they like to read...) as a means for them to learn the methods. It is so well written and easy to understand that it's a really great choice. Either Dijk's or Pedersen's you could pick up - previously knowing nothing about DBT - and be able to understand and incorporate the techniques into your personal coping skills or those you teach to others. However, as mentioned by a couple of reviews by laymen, picking up this recovery based one by Bein, you will not get that same easy understanding of the concepts and ideas - you pretty much need to have a basic working knowledge of DBT before getting into this one. For a recovery client I'd say this is as clear and concise and easy to work with as the Dijk and Pedersen books if you already have the basics of DBT. However, if you're starting from scratch with no DBT background, go for the Dijk or Pedersen texts first as you can always adapt the ideas and concepts to recovery issues on the fly. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Better Than I Had Hoped For By Bill Cashell Since I am not a therapist, I was concerned that this book might be too clinical and somewhat over my head. I did a quick search on the author Andrew Bein, and found that he is a Full Professor with the Division of Social Work at California State University, Sacramento. He has also written another book - The Zen of Helping: Spiritual Principles for Mindful and Open-Hearted Practice. That was encouraging enough to take a chance, and I'm happy I did. As a veteran, I did struggle with PTSD and found great success with various techniques. I have been constantly looking for other ways to improve my outlook on life. This was my first introduction to Dialectical Behavior Therapy, although I am very familiar with other types of therapy. The cover states "requiring no previous experience or training in DBT", and I would agree with that to some extent. If I didn't have some knowledge of other therapies, I think it would have been harder to grasp. The book is well written, much like I would expect from a college professor. It is fairly easy to read, although the large number of reference notes made it seem like a college text book mated with a "how to" book. Dr. Bein does have a decent writing style that kept me engaged and avoided being too dry for the average reader.
This is really a book aimed at practitioners that can also help the average person can learn about DBT. It is not really a self help book although I did find some of exercises very helpful. See all 19 customer reviews...
