From the eighteenth century until 1945, German children were taught to model themselves on the young of an Ancient Greek city-state: Sparta. From older children, from teachers in the classroom, and from higher authority first in Prussia, then in Imperial and National Socialist Germany, came images of Sparta designed to inculcate ideals of endurance, discipline and of military self-sacrifice. Identification with Sparta could also be used to justify ideas of domination over Germany's eastern neighbours. Helen Roche is the first to examine this still sensitive topic systematically and in depth. She collects and analyses official and published German evocations of Sparta but also, and remarkably, reconstructs the experiences of German children taught to be 'little Spartans' in the Prussian Cadet Corps and National Socialist elite schools, the Napolas. In treating the final, and gravest, period of this process, the author has personally collected testimony from numerous surviving German witnesses who attended the Napolas as children in the early 1940s. That testimony is presented here, in a work which is likely to proof definitive, not only for its treasury of new information, but for its elegant - and humane - analysis. ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

By Julie Jordan I was fortunate enough to read this book in dissertation form several months ago. Just when you think there is nothing new to learn about Nazi Germany (although this book traces the entire history of the Royal Prussian Cadet-Corps, going back to 1818), Dr. Helen Roche presents us with a compelling survey of how elite pupils were trained to equate the icons and ideals of ancient Sparta
with Nazi views of ideal racial purity. In the end, one has the impression that these boys were more faithful to the Nationalpolitische Erziehungsanstalten (Napolas--the successor to the Cadet-Corps during the Third Reich) than they were to the Nazi regime, per se. The most fascinating element of Dr. Roche's research, at least for a lay reader, is the wealth of anecdotal evidence gleaned from survivors of the Napolas, many of whom had never spoken widely on the subject before, and may not be with us all that much longer. Among other things, we learn about the lengths to which these stoic boys were willing to go--sometimes to the brink of death--to demonstrate their fidelity to Cadet-Corps and Napola traditions, and here there certainly are strong links to German faithfulness to Nazi ideals and doctrines. Dr. Roche writes with great flair and intellectual acuity. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the links between classicism and recent European history, and a little-known but fascinating corner of the history of Nazi Germany.
