Mr. Benikov wanted to write a book that not only dealt with starting a law practice but how to go about developing a professional reputation. Some Good Advice but Somewhat Misleading Title By AG The good: All too often "How to Start a Law Practice" books are dated and don't reflect the challenge modern law school graduates face. The writer graduated at one of the worst possible times and this book offers great advice for those starting out on their own. A lot of great common sense advice is included in this book that law schools just don't teach you. I think prospective and current law school students should read this book to see what they may be up against postgraduation. The book is clearly written in a no-nonsense style and is very easy to digest. The bad: The author practices criminal law and this book primarily focuses on what worked for him in that particular field of law. So, I would say if you want to be a criminal defense attorney or prosecutor, this is the book for you. The book is short on advice for lawyers who don't want to practice in these areas. I would suggest on a future revision including a co-author or stories of other new attorneys and what worked for them. Covering and contracts aren't going to get me any clients in the fields of law I want to practice.
I also believe the title of this book is misleading, I assumed there would be detailed advice and instructions for running a practice. At just a little over 100 pages, the book offers cursory instructions. However, I did find some helpful. For $32, I figured I would be getting a book I could use as a reference when I was starting my practice. That is not the case, after reading the book in a couple hours and making notes, I am done with it. Lastly, the book is full of typos, grammatical errors, and generally poor grammar. Ironic given that the author discusses proper grammar and proofreading. Ultimately, I would read this book again, but I wouldn't purchase it. It doesn't have any real value outside of the first or second read, you won't be reaching for this book when you have a question setting up your practice. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Must Read for All New Attorneys and Law School Students By Jeff Dreyer This book is an excellent read for those new attorneys and law school students who have one day even thought of having their own practice. This book gives real world insight into (1) starting your own firm, (2) but more importantly how to succeed in the practice. The author speaks in plain language that is clear and to the point. By Ran Tao This book contains valuable information to be a lawyer and to survive the hard society when you started the career. If you are looking forward on how much a lawyer would make in a year; or to find fancy experience for lawyers, this book may not fit your dream. What the book tells are solid truth and real experience of a person who had practiced though and be willing to share the detail of law. As an ongoing law student, this book really shows useful tips on my future practice.
