From the Back Cover Healthcare, probably more than any other industry, has everything to gain from moving to modern data reporting and analytics systems. Which is why it is so surprising that, on the whole, the industry has been so slow to adopt the business intelligence (BI) programs and data warehousing (DW) systems that drive such functions. In part, this has to do with a lack of knowledge among healthcare business leaders about how a BI program can benefit their organizations and what is involved in building and maintaining one. Written by an author at the forefront of the healthcare BI revolution, Healthcare Business Intelligence fills that knowledge gap. Not a technical manual or data modeling guide, this book was written for CIOs, IT managers, and other business professionals who want to know more about BI, specifically within a healthcare context. It tells you how to present a strong business case for BI, as well as how to plan, budget, build, and maintain a BI program. And, as no two healthcare organizations are the same, it offers priceless pointers on how to shape a BI program to your organization's unique information needs, data resources, and culture. Based upon author Laura Madsen's extensive experience modeling BI programs for healthcare institutions and with numerous real-life case studies illustrating the advantages of a well-designed BI program (and the disadvantages of a poorly designed one), this book fills you in on: ● ● ● ● ● ●

The crucial 5 tenets of healthcare business intelligence How to assess your organization's preparedness to adopt BI How to build an effective BI team The risks associated with getting BI/DW wrong and how to minimize them Tools and techniques for jump-starting your BI program Developing an effective BI lexicon for use in your organization

Most helpful customer reviews 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Solid advice written in a highly accessible way By Dallas Marks Healthcare Business Intelligence, + Website: A Guide to Empowering Successful Data Reporting and Analytics by Laura Madsen is a book written for healthcare professionals that need to understand business intelligence and how to manage healthcare business intelligence projects. Author Laura Madsen has spent her entire professional career in healthcare business intelligence, so the book's title isn't surprising. What is surprising is that she has written a thorough yet easy-tounderstand guide that can be used by professionals any industry, not just healthcare. If you're a business intelligence professional hoping to learn about healthcare, this book wasn't written specifically for you. Instead, my friend and fellow [...] co-author Gabe Orthous recommends Healthcare Informatics: Improving Efficiency and Productivity. But BI professionals can still get a

tremendous amount of value out of this book that may not be immediately obvious. Laura Madsen is a business intelligence professional explaining BI to non-business intelligence professionals. In particular, BI project managers can learn a lot from her writing style about how to communicate with our colleagues on the "business side" of our projects. You'll also get a lot of value from the templates that you can download from the book's web site. Whether you're in healthcare or not, business professionals and technology professionals working in business intelligence will find this book to be a worthy edition to their bookshelf. 2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. extremely easy to follow By tbell Anyone who has tried to implement a BI product knows it's not easy to do. Laura lays out a great plan that should make your implementation much easier as long as you follow her lead. She shares her years of experience at a level that anyone can understand. Whether you are a business leader or an IT leader looking for a guide of how to successfully implement a BI program, this is THE book to get you started. She provides many useful tools that should take away some of the potential pains. The best part of this book is that her plan would work in any industry, but don't underestimate the difficulty in dealing with healthcare data. It is great to have a book available that focuses on the healthcare industry and BI. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great Book for the Complexities of Healthcare By J Burke I work for a Healthcare System that is successfully transforming from a hospital system into a health system. Now that a comprehensive Electronic Health Record has been implemented there is thousand of data elements available to utilize to improve the quality of clinical care and of the patient experience across the various continuums of care. Our organization is embarking on developing a roadmap for Business Intelligence to better utilize the available internal and external data. Laura Madsen's book has been a great resource in that development as it has helped a diverse group of leaders get clear as to the key definitions and success factors for BI, along with detail guidance to implement BI successfully. I am thankful for such a complete and well thought out book. See all 16 customer reviews...
