Angel You just have to read the new intro and first chapter of "Rolling Stoned" to appreciate how far Andrew Loog Oldham has come as a writer. This book is a first-class, totally entertaining read. Oldham has always been clever with words, as anyone who's ever read the liner notes from the original Stones albums will tell you, but now he's taken it to a new level and the result is thoroughly enjoyable reading. He's obviously been busy honing his craft over the years. In this new book Oldham's stories are rich with word play and his descriptions are fascinating and often hilarious ("Madame Jagger" cracks me up). His first two books were good but this book is a quantum leap above the others in terms of writing style, a story well told, and pure entertainment. I read my first Oldham book, Stoned, because I was a Stones fan. I have since become an ALO fan and look forward to more of his writing in the future. Passion, Fates and Perseverance By Kindle Customer Events will take their course, it is no good of being angry at them; he is happiest who wisely turns them to the best account. Euripides Rolling Stoned (Gegensatz Press, 2011) is the autobiography chronicling the adventures of Andrew Loog Oldham during his tenure as manager/producer of The Rolling Stones. The book is a synthesis and distillation of two previous works by Mr. Oldham: Stoned: A Memoir of London in the 1960s (2000) and 2Stoned (2002). In Rolling Stoned the reader is presented with a personal and revealing account of the fates, passions and perseverance experienced by Mr. Oldham that lead eventually to the development of
what became The Rolling Stones. The tale is exhaustive and the reader should be prepared for emotional ups and downs including the exhilaration of successes, loathing associated with selfdoubt, and redemption of the individual having survived an ordeal. This, dear reader, is an exceptionally heartfelt and very personal tale, filtered through the lens of popular music. In particular, three episodes stand as exemplary to our understanding of the author's experience this with honesty not seen often in the world of show business. The first of the triptych recalls an episode during the completing the first recording by The Rolling Stones at Olympic Recording Studios. Recording engineer Roger Savage wondered aloud to Mr. Oldham about the necessary final mixing of the raw track, to which our author responded to the question of mixing with, "What's that?" Revelations such as this are the fresh breeze through the usual over perfumed, velvet drapes adorning other histories of rock and roll. Another example - this as the author as an apparition, - comes in the tale of a meeting with the actor Mr. Michael Caine on the streets of New York City. Mr. Caine, with no prior knowledge of the split between Oldham and The Rolling Stones, asks, "How are the lads?" in references to what must has been Mr. Oldham's continued association with the once and future princes of the pop world - to which the once confidant Svengali and counselor could respond only, "Oh great, everything's just fine" when in fact nothing was fine. The exhilaration of success by the twenty year old Oldham is illustrated in the tale of negotiations with the old guard of the recording industry. During a meeting with the elder Sir Edward Lewis of Decca Records Mr. Oldham seeks to secure funding for the recent project that became Marianne Faithfull, and more importantly, to secure the acknowledgement from the established industry confirming Mr. Oldham's own ascendancy in "the business." To this metaphorical end, Sir Edward listens to the Oldham produced acetate of Ms. Faithfull's version of "As Tears Go By." As the track fades out, Sir Edward Lewis seems to acknowledge that time has come, he telephones his assistant Dick Rowe and in a final command states; "Dick, give the boy the money." Folks, it doesn't get better than that. Since splitting from The Rolling Stones in 1967, Andrew Loog Oldham has managed, interacted with, met, been introduced to, has introduced, worked with, seen to, listened to, assisted, advised and has been on the scene with a long list of musicians, actors, and authors. There have been the demons too; these encounters are described in detail within the pages of this latest effort. With that said, the casual reader of music history, Rolling Stoned may be overwhelming in detail. Remember, however, this is our view into the on-going catharsis of a lifetime for Mr. Oldham, and not an issue of Tiger Beat. Conversely, for those who want more, more, more, so much more, detail of these remarkable times can be found in the aforementioned earlier works, Stoned and 2Stoned. In addition, further appreciation of the author can be found during Mr. Oldham's daily broadcasts on SiriusXM Channel 21, Little Steven's (Van Zant) Underground Garage. Along with playing exceptional music, Mr. Oldham provides opinions and observations of a variety of current events in social, political and popular with the benefit of his years in "the business." Do yourself a favor and listen in. Students and fans of popular music of the late twentieth century may wonder why groups such as Tomorrow or The Move (no slight to Mr. Cordell intended), or even as of late, Oasis, didn't find their way to conquering the Americas and obtaining the credentials necessary to gain admission to the pantheon. Certainly there are many reasons, innumerable twists and turns of fate that can either make or break an act. However, one thing is for certain, none of those other groups had the

By Cbryce Andrew Oldham is so full of himself, it makes an otherwise interesting story hard to take. Plus, who knows if half of it is true? He is the hero in so many of the episodes, and probably knows no one is alive or cares enough to dispute him by now. To hear him tell it, he told off or fought off more people than Keith Richards. I was wanting to read it, to get the scoop, but found myself doubting him so often, it was difficult to continue. I was actually looking forward to his crash and burn after a while. I also don't like the way he disses Brain Jones from the start; I am not a particular Jones fan by any means, but it rubs me the wrong way that he was so down on him from the start. The guy was a brilliant musician with a mixed up brain. I think that Brian probably did not like Oldham so he had to be a schoolboy about it and make fun of him after his death. He is also pretty grudging at times about the Beatles, he gives them just enough love and credit not to sound like a total moron, but to me he comes off as jealous and petty at times. Also, I hate exclamation points with a passion. If what you are saying is significant enough, they should not be required. In my mind, they should only be used, if at all, in a quote when someone is screaming or swearing. This book is an example of why I prefer biographies to autobiographies. I never believe the person who is writing their own story. No matter how much dirt about themselves they toss in to make it seem real, it is still their version and they are going to tell it their way. And this guy always comes off as sounding as though he was so much more clever and with-it than everyone else. See all 11 customer reviews...
