But there's plenty to keep his mind off his problems. A rapist in a police uniform stalks Challis's Peninsula beat, there is a serial armed robber headed in his direction and a home invasion that's a little too close to home. Not to mention a very clever, very mysterious female cat burglar who may or may not be planning something on Challis's patch. Meanwhile, at the Waterloo Police Station, Challis finds his officers have their own issues. Scobie Sutton, still struggling with his wife's depression, seems to be headed for a career crisis; and something very interesting is going on between Constable Pam Murphy and Jeanne Schiff, the feisty young sergeant on assignment from the Sex Crimes Unit. ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

Garry Disher never disappoints By Pine Street Reader Whether he is writing about Wyatt the thief or Hal Challis the Police Inspector, Garry Disher never disappoints a reader. This novel is suspenseful, serious and satisfying. I hope Disher continues to bring his corner of Australia to us for many years to come. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Tight plotting, great characters By E. Kanell I like Disher's Hal Challis/Ellen Destry series for its realistic take on the emotions of police work and what it is to be human while investigating inhuman cruelty. WHISPERING DEATH is tightly plotted, well written, and I'll shelve it under "worth reading again." Good crime fiction with insight. 11 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Great series. When is the next one coming? By Wayne Robinson This is the sixth book in the Hal Challis police procedurals set in the exotic location of the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, Australia. It is excellent, like all the previous novels. My rating is both for the series and also this book. Apparently, whenever Garry Disher publishes a new book, the Mornington Peninsula Tourist Bureau has to have a new advertising campaign to overcome the negative publicity. I wonder why a tourist operator couldn't start a tour to cover some of the locations mentioned in the books (the town of Hastings is thinly disguised as the books' Waterloo). Ystad in Sweden gets a lot of publicity as being the setting for Henning Mankell's Kurt Wallender series. 'Whispering Death' finishes with the characteristic enigmatic ending that probably won't be resolved in the next novel. See all 24 customer reviews...
