A must-read for anybody interested in Balabanov, Russian film or Genre/Film in general By New Floh Sterling One of the book's strongest contributions is to the study of contemporary Russian culture, and here the choice of Balabanov is spot-on. At first glance, this monograph might strike the reader as old-fashioned: a sustained, focused analysis of the work of a single artist. In reality, however, the book is a forward-looking and-especially in its contribution to film genre studies--innovative piece of film scholarship. This is as much due to the author's keen choice of subject (by which I mean Balabanov himself and, more specifically, the director's five `Zeitgeist' films that form the core of the book) as to his thorough grounding in genre theory. As the author points out early on, film genre has too often been used solely as a way to describe or classify films, rather than as the powerful analytical prism he has convincingly shown it to be. Weinhold's book captures Balabanov's contributions to both post-Soviet cinema and the development of film genre and genre film in many different ways, and across the exhilarating variety of his films. Focusing on Balabanov and his "Zeitgeist" films the author gives a solid theoretical foundation as well as interesting directions of interpretation, guided by thoroughly analysis on the subject.
