We have a trip coming up shortly where we are taking the grand kids to Walt Disney World. We have a 6 year old granddaughter who is learning to read and when I saw this book, I thought it would be a good one to pick up to take with us on the trip. Perhaps to pass the time on the airplane or read to her in the evening in our hotel room. My thought was that it could be something humorous that grampa could read to her. Or even to have her try to read it herself. We could both have a laugh and she might learn something about how the body works. So, when I first opened the book, my adult daughter and a friend of hers were visiting us. We all opened the book and first looked at the pictures. Oops! There are a lot of pictures of poop (cartoon pictures). Both my daughter and her friend yelled "EWWW" when just looking at some of the pictures. It was comical seeing their reactions. There are some funny pictures showing animals, birds, and people passing gas and poop that is parachuting. You also get a lesson in washing your hands after going to the bathroom and about where germs are lurking. I love the art in this book. It does not leave a whole lot to the imagination, but the pictures are done in a way that is more comical than disgusting. The story is done in a Dr. Seuss rhyming way, so it is very easy to read and is appealing to young children. There are some interesting facts about poop and animals at the end. Overall, this is an entertaining book that I am looking forward to reading with my granddaughter in a week when we head down to Disney World. I have decided that it will definitely NOT be one to read to her on the plane going down though. What would people in the seats around us think about me reading poopie rhymes to a little girl. Ha..ha.. My sister in Iowa has decided she might want to pick up a copy to read to her grandson and granddaughter. This book can be read end-2-end in about 10 minutes. Perhaps longer if you are reading to a child and read slower out loud for emphasis and to look and comment about the pictures. This book will certainly entertain little ones who might think poop is a shocking subject.

The cartoon pictures take a lot of the shock value out of the topic and make it seem more okay to be reading to a young one. I think this is a great book to read to a young child in the 4-7 year old area. Informative fun way for children to learn about defecation By Israel Drazin This unusual and interesting children's book, composed in delightful rhymes accompanied by eyecatching drawings, is designed to capture children's interest and teach them the simple facts of the science of digestion and health in a fun way. Children learn the basics of how the body functions and how food affects their bodies. The primary focus is on defecation. Children are curious about it since they do it virtually every day and they see their parents interested that they do it right. Yet they don't understand what is going on, and want to know. The illustrations show the digestive body parts and children, even as young as four, can understand how foods are digested and go through what are like pipes, and, most importantly, they learn that this is a natural process that helps the body stay healthy. Hayes shares lots of information such as: the color of poop depends on what one eats and can indicate a person's health, cockroaches toot every fifteen minutes, African elephants deposit as much as three hundred pounds of poop daily while the average human deposits two pounds daily, seventy-five percent of feces is made of water, meat makes feces smell more because meat is rich in sulfides, what a poop is made of, where does it go when a toilet is flushed, and much more. She also adds rules such as never touch poops, don't poop in your pants, always wash after defecation, and don't discuss defecation unless you need to tell someone you need to find a bathroom. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. And, why do our bodies make stinky poop? If your child has ever asked the last question, the answer can be found in this cleverly-written book by Katie Hayes. Hayes tells kids where poop comes from and why our bodies make it. She explains what happens to poop when it's flushed down the toilet. She also lists several different slang names for poop, such as "doodie", "skat", "kakka" and "stink bomb". And she stresses the importance of good hygiene. At the end of the book she lists "5 Things to Remember about Poop", most of which deals with hygiene. And, she includes a few fun facts about the stinky stuff. Did you know that an adult African Elephant can produce up to 300 pounds of poop every day? Not that's a lot of "doodie"! The text is written in rhyme. I'm not a big fan of rhyming verse as it is difficult to do and do it well. But Hayes handles the job quite nicely, making the rhyme work for a book of this nature.
