Beautiful 2016 fantasy art calendar By Marshall Lord Boris Vallejo has been publishing beautiful fantasy art calendars for several decades: I've bought one each year for the last twenty years (starting in 1995) and I believe he published several as far back as the eighties. Often there is a unifying theme or narrative to the collections in a calendar, sometimes with accompanying text from a master of written fantasy such as Philip Jose Farmer (1995) or C.J. Henderson (2002). For the past decade and a half these calendars have been joint productions between Boris and his present wife, Julie Bell. Indeed, they are often family productions: Julie's son Anthony Palombo is one of the authors of the story text linking the paintings in a previous calendar, and the last few calendars including this 2016 one have had protrait photgraphs on the back cover of artists Boris and Julie taken by Boris's daughter Maya Vallejo who is a professional photographer. This 2016 calendar contains thirteen exceptionally lovely images (one for each month and a double spread between June and July) with the following titles: January: "The Firethorn" (a beautiful woman with butterfly wings facing a dragon, sword in hand) February: "Intertwined" (a couple asleep) March: "The Offering" April: "Firestorm" (A man and woman on a ship passing through dangerous waters) May (and cover): "Escape" June: "The Messenger" (A centaur, a bear, and a tiny dragon) Centre spread: "Discovery" July: "The Transformation" August: "Fighting back" September: "Searching" October: "On Dragon's Wings" Noveber: "The Final Battle" December: "Soaring Higher." This year's pictures are in roughly equal proportions a tribute to the male and female human form, but often also include those of real or fantasy animals, or most often a mixture. Many of these illustrations display a wry humour. For example one of this year's pictures looks at first like it could have come straight out of a Tarzan illustration, until you realise that the otherwise perfect idealised human male form of the man in the picture has a monster's face. Is it a mask or is he - as the text hints may be the case - turning into a monster? And at the same time the gorilla towards whom the largely human form is swinging has an almost human expression on his face ... I really appreciate the depiction of each month's subject matter in their beautiful and tasteful illustrations. Each of Boris and Julie's
calendars have a year of myths and fantasies presented in their superb paintings. Good stuff as always By Chris I buy Julie and Boris' work every year and it is consistently wonderful. I have enjoyed their art work for years, and Boris many years prior to that.
