Review Praise for Enchantment “…It is difficult to think of a better title for Thaisa Frank's captivating collection of new and selected stories than Enchantment...[it] has a marvelous, dreamlike quality - the sort of book that is not so much read as it is experienced, a spellbinding blend of flash fiction, short stories, and novellas that also move seamlessly and pleasingly from the concrete and the surreal, the historical and the fantastic…Like many great story collections, Enchantment is a book that teaches the reader how to read it as they move through its pages, and…it soon becomes apparent that Frank is writing what she knows about - that in her varied, imaginative and often metaphorical means of capturing emotional truth, she has created an honest, affecting and mesmerizing book, one that shines powerfully and unforgettably with that wonderful sense of enchantment of which Nabokov speaks.” —San Francisco Chronicle "The title of this collection hints at its contents—delectable stories with touches of the surreal as well as many plot twists and surprises. From short-short story to novella, each narrative demonstrates mastery of the genre. Frank’s style is tightly controlled and lyrical, yet contains a richness of detail that seamlessly integrates fantasy elements and magic realism."—Booklist "Thaisa Frank’s Enchantment serves the reader small, jeweled worlds of wonder— contortionists and circus masters, enchanted men and vampires, angel channelers and Pre-Raphaelites. This powerful and unforgettable collection shows the mortal challenges faced by even the most extraordinary characters.” —Siobhan Fallon, author of You Know When the Men Are Gone "Enchantment explores the shadows at the edges of our lives, and the restless truths that inhabit them. Thaisa Frank's prose is pitch-perfect, as is her instinct for exploring the unspoken hungers of the human spirit. These are stories of startling beauty, boldly imagined and finely wrought." —Carolina De Robertis, author of Perla

ENCHANTMENT: NEW AND SELECTED STORIES BY THAISA FRANK PDF

The short fiction of Thaisa Frank has captivated readers for two decades, and now many of those pieces are collected in one volume, along with several new stories. In the title story, a lonely mother and housewife orders an enchanted man from a website called The Wondrous Traveler, who arrives with instructions for use and a list of frequently asked questions about enchantment. In “Thread,” two circus performers who pass through the eye of a needle become undone by a complicated love triangle. In “Henna,” a young writing teacher must contend with an exotic student who will not write, her hands covered in dye and her fingers “sprouting innumerable gardens.” And in “The Loneliness of the Midwestern Vampire,” the undead descend upon the heartland of the country and become accustomed to its friendlier way of life, attending barn raisings and feasting on cattle in an attempt to normalize their darker passions. These are vibrant, compelling stories that examine the distance between imagination and reality, and how characters bridge that gap in their attempt to reach one another. ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

Most helpful customer reviews 6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. soaring and magical By Harriet Chessman I am a huge fan of Thaisa Frank's -- I've loved her stories for many years, and I have been bowled over by her novel HEIDEGGER'S GLASSES (which, if you haven't read, you should!), so I was joyful to discover that she's created a new collection, containing both her brilliant new stories and some of her very best earlier ones. Each of these pieces, from the first few words, brings you into a clear, unusual fictional world, resembling the one we live in and yet suffused with a sense of otherness and rich strangeness. I fall in love with all of her characters, and with the voices she crafts for each story. If you wish to see what it might be like to be a gentle and kind Midwestern vampire, longing for his lover across the centuries, even as he accepts well-meant casseroles == or if you wonder what it might be like to be a member of a 2-person circus act, slipping together through the eye of a needle (pure Frank, this one --- where metaphor is shimmering just outside the story's images with playful and witty beauty) . . . or if you wish to be reminded of what it's like to discover Poland in your rear-view mirror . . . or if you simply wish to be in the presence of a master storyteller, and to walk through some magical fictional doors . . . I can't recommend this collection heartily enough. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Not like anything else ever written By Sarah S. Thaisa Frank writes brilliant, beautiful, startling, enticing - and sometimes unnerving stories - not like anything anyone else is writing, or has ever written. They combine great sophistication about human desires and relationships with a sly playfulness, and then, just as quickly, they can become very moving. I love this book. She has many voices, every one of them distinctly her own, and tones that range from a dreamlike lucidity to an omniscience that can be sad, funny, and mysterious all at the same time. This passage from "The Loneliness of the Midwestern Vampire" gives some sense of how layered the stories are (and how gripping and how surprising): He wasn't always lonely because he came to the Midwest with Tania over a hundred years ago. They wanted to escape the decadence of Europe. They wanted to found a community of vampires. They bit indiscriminately - confused, frightened people who joined them for a night, morphed into humans the next day, and never mentioned being bitten. Best left unsaid is the motto of the heartlands. At first he and Tania had nothing but contempt for these people, whom they regarded as ants, living small mortal-minded lives. Then Patsy Hardy's great grandmother gave them her old featherbed, and it was so comfortable they violated the vampire code and stopped sleeping in their coffins. Soon they began to go to sleep earlier and earlier. With each bright day, the friendly neighbors drew them in.

He went to barnraisings, winnowed wheat, and helped dig out people who were snowbound. Tania went to quilting bees and made pies and casseroles for the harvester picnics. She started to chide him for drinking human blood and pestered him to build a chicken coop so they could start an egg farm. If only we had a child, she would say. No matter what's happening in the stories, they feel completely believable: they make sense out of daily life, maybe especially of marriages and family life. The beginning of "The Dungeon Master's Mother" has this quality of being funny, sad, strange, and real all at the same time as we overhear a woman turning into an anthropologist of her own life, a voice from some distant future, the beginning of her transformation into something utterly unexpected: She couldn't remember when she began to feel like a time-traveler in her own house. Maybe one morning when she looked at a plate of her son's half-finished ragged-edged eggs and thought, This was a human custom at the time. They started their eggs and never finished them. Or maybe one evening, when she looked at her daughter's homework, noticed she'd quoted an entire poem by Millet and thought, At the end of that particular century, they quoted poems and filled a lot of space on the page. The voice that spoke was not her own. It was quiet, deep, guarded. One evening she put her husband's shoes in his closet and stood there for a moment, looking at his shirts, ties, business suits, T-shirts, blue jeans. She looked more closely at the clothes, and the voice spoke again: Almost every day, at the end of that century, people dressed one way in the morning and another way at night. It was the custom. When I read these stories, I feel like a time-traveler in my own life, and at the same time I also understand more about the world. I'm really grateful for this book. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Dazzling Collection of short stories, flash fictions and novellas By LWright I first discovered Thaisa Frank's collection of stories, Enchantment, when I ran across a glowing review in the SF Chronicle ([...]). I'd read HEIDEGGER'S GLASSES by Frank and loved it, but wasn't aware that she is a master of every possible short form--the short story, the novella, and flash fiction--which is having an upsurge in American fiction today. All of her stories, told in a spare minimalist style with a rich subtext of metaphor and imagery, gave me a jolt. Her vision is unique--giving the reader the sense that the ordinary can become extraordinary (a Midwestern family's sad journey, a student from the Mideast in a feminist studies class) or that the extraordinary can become quite ordinary (a Midwestern vampire, the vision of Poland in the rearview mirror of a car). Frank writes with deftness and humor, never missing a beat. One of her characters (the owner of a jewelry shop) says "our goal is to enchant, not to deceive." And, indeed, by enchanting me in these stories, Frank brings the truth into bold relief. See all 7 customer reviews...
