But he’s not an alcoholic. He’s just a deeply sensitive butterfly. He meets Jake, a grey-eyed knight in shining armor who pulls him off the floor after a drag queen knocks him out. After a Christmas party that involves a midget, a gay quadriplegic, and an ill-timed kiss, the two begin a deep friendship to which Jack desperately clings. The guilt he suffers for being secretly in love with Jake is just the price of admission for an anti-hero like Jack, who is starting to wonder when he’ll retrieve his identity again, or if he ever had one to begin with. What ensues is a twenty-first century allegory of miscommunication, love, and booze, told through propulsive sentences, driven by ego and hilarious dark wit, as Jack stumbles through the dark in search of light. ● ● ● ●

By christopher montwill With witty, bitingly sarcastic prose the author makes you fall into a vapid, booze-fueled, sex-crazed gay distopia, where all you can do is hope for redemption and perspective for all aboard. Along the way, glimpses of people are revealed only to be covered in shadows of doubt 3 sentences later. While not wholly unexpected, the main character emerges with a new direction and philosophy on life, but, as always, the trip is more worthwhile than the destination. At least in fiction. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Engaging and Endearing By John P. Dugan I'm always a little nervous reading a new author, but this book surprised me. The author presents a cohesive and engaging narrative that is simultaneously funny and tragic. It is a rare book with
characters so well rounded that you care for them and wonder what happens next once the story is complete. I caught myself laughing out loud at multiple points and wanting to scream at the primary character at others. Books like these come around only rarely and the author's work here foreshadows great things to come. If you want an engaging and endearing read that demands engagement with the characters this book is for you. I'd also be hard pressed to classify this as just a gay book. Yes there is some sex. Yes there is a drag queen. However, it is so much more and anyone who has gone through struggle will readily relate to the journey of the main character and the people in his life. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great Read from a First-Time Writer. Buy this book! By Mrs. S Smith The title and cover art alone grabbed my attention so I thought, why not? Spelunking Toward Illumination DID NOT disappoint! :) I felt like a fly on the wall in what feels like a very intimate tale. It's like the gay "Reality Bites" meets the gay "Sex in the City".... It's funny, sexy as hell but, seamlessly, a bit dark and lonely at the same time. It's always a treat finding new and interesting writers! I hope that Mr. Pike sticks around.
