It is funny and lighthearted, yet heavy at times. Ms. Dorham captures the seriousness of anger, jealousy, and love for all the wrong reasons, as well as the joy, laughter, peace, and simplicity of love for all the right reasons. She gives a clear picture of her heroine, a young college drop-out named Jewel, as one who was hurt in her past but has overcome it. She has put her trust in God to fulfill her deep desires and seeks with all her heart to follow His lead in her life. Her family rejects her and she is consequently on her own. She meets Carter, a rich, confused, and proud widower with 4 girls to contend with, when applying for a live-in nanny position. Together they have to overcome racial prejudices and the suspicions they have developed over the years of what the opposite sex is really like. Through Jewel's genuine goodness and sense of order, she begins to win the heart of those who distrust her. "Jewel" touches on many issues that face our young people and our families today with genuine solutions. The simplicity of the romance will help you get back to the basics of what true love is, for a woman and a man. What do I need and what do I have to give?

By Cathy Allen I just finished reading Sylvia Dorham's JEWEL: A Romance, and I found I couldn't put it down. I can't remember the last time I had THAT experience; the characters became real - I want to know what occurred after the book ended. It kept me reading to see what would happen next with this seemingly-mismatched couple, and I was not disappointed. They don't SEEM to have much in common: she (Jewel) is white, he (Carter) is black; she needs a job, he owns a company; she's young and single, he's a decade older and a widower. They meet because she's been a nanny, and he hires her to care for his 4 small daughters. That's how they meet, get to know each other, and fall in love. Carter's little girls are a delight and need a mother. Jewel is an instinctual mother, with experience caring for small children. They don't SEEM to have much in common, but we find that they are BOTH simply looking to love and be loved. This is a SWEET romance - NICE people; Christian, church-going, praying people. A clean story; no sex, just love, attraction and romance - how old-fashioned! How LOVELY! I'd give JEWEL: A Romance 10 stars, if I could; it's that good.
