By Backpacker This book has some great information about the Mojave National Preserve area, including not only well known sites but sites that few people have heard of. There is also a great section on the history of the area, on the animals in the area, desert survival tips, etc. It's a book that every visitor who plans on spending quality time at the Mojave National Preserve should read before going. When I say "quality time", I mean that you plan on getting out of your vehicle and walking around, really noticing what the desert has to offer (i.e. plant life, rock formations, etc). 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Pricey guide may not be necessary. By George D. Smith If you go to the website for this National Preserve, you can get just about all the information contained in this pricey guidebook. But it is nice to have a small guidebook to tote in car or in the pack if you are out exploring. I have only camped in the Mitchell Cavern State Park, which is now

closed. Those caverns are worth a visit, and I hope they open again. The camping at the State Park is little more than a flat area adjacent to the parking lot. Not very fancy but a great place to view the stars. I intended to go back and visit some of the other campsites in the preserve and do some hiking. But be forwarned: Check the roads before embarking...they were washed out when I made my trip last fall 2013- and I was unable to get to the campground. I ended up in a motel in Needles. So the preserve is still on my list of places to visit, and it makes a convenient stop en route to Grand Canyon. For the price, this guide should have some maps. It has none. Download and print them up from the Website. I do think the history in this little guidebook makes it worthwhile, but you can get that online now too. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good overview, lacks maps By Linda Lou In general, this book is well written and provides a nice overview of the Mojave National Preserve and it's treasures. Unfortunately, although it includes many photos, none of them are in color. This is a disservice to the beauty of the MNP and the wonder the authors describe. However, as a geographer and adventurer, the biggest problem with this book is the lack of maps, both of the MNP in general, and of the more specific regions the authors explore. Although there are some maps, they are more like sketches and provide no geographic guidance or reference points. Without prior knowledge or a plethora of maps from outside sources, one could easily become lost, and there is no way to really visualize the vastness of the MNP and territory it encompasses. It is a shame. With better maps and color, this book could be a real jewel. See all 7 customer reviews...
