Good for a quick and simple introduction to Moroccan history By Ferinha Usually when I travel to a country where I've never been, I purchase a book about its history so that I don't arrive as a blank page. I believe it's important to know where a people come from, where they are and where they're going. It shows respect to a people if you have taken the time to learn about their past. This book does that, but leaves you longing for more. I believe that WWII onwards was covered in about 20 pages. Mention of massacres were truly glossed over in mere paragraphs and required an Internet search to learn more. The author does provide an "Additional Reading" section, which I appreciated, but at times I just wanted to see more.
Very little was spent on Moroccan's current king and I believe that a country with a monarch should have at least a chapter on him. Regardless, if you're looking for a very brief history of a country without too many details, this is your book. It is written in a very fluid and easy to read manner. If you're looking for something in depth, keep looking. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Very Fine Survey Thru End of the 20th Century By anonymous Though "re-issued" in 2009, this book was first published in 2003. We should all hope that the writer will publish an updated edition to give us his analysis of the first 15 years of Muhammad VI's reign. What he has written is an excellent survey of Moroccan history for the intelligent layperson. He covers a mass of complicated conflicts without becoming overly academic. The style is very readable. One can easily get lost among the numerous contenders for power in Morocco over the last many centuries but Pennell doesn't get bogged down in the details. At the end he has a useful chapter with helpful comments and suggestions for further reading. This is an excellent introduction to the subject. Unless you are interested in doing serious academic research this book will probably tell you all you need to know about Moroccan history up to the beginning of the current century. 0 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
