Most helpful customer reviews 8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. An important book on Aristotle's ethics. By Max M. Thomas C.D.C. Reeve is a familiar name in Greek scholarship. He's written on Plato and the Pre-Socratics. Aristotle on Practical Wisdom is his third book on the Nicomachean Ethics. He has spent a great deal of time and effort thinking about Aristotelian ethics, and it shows in this latest book. First, the book is devoted entirely to Book VI of the Nicomachean Ethics. (Of course, the same is Book V of the Eudemian Ethics, since it is one of the three books common to both works on ethics.) Aristotle's concern with practical wisdom is his moral epistemology where we learn how he thinks about knowing right from wrong. More specifically, it's about our knowing specifically what action is virtuous, avoiding the opposing vices. Aristotle spends a great deal of time distinguishing the faculty of practical (moral) reasoning from other forms of reasoning. Near the end of Book VI, we finally discover the "correct reason" necessary for making proper moral judgments. Thus, the book is particularly valuable to serious students of Aristotle, moral epistemology, and so-called moral psychology. Second, this book reminds me of the Clarendon Aristotle series. Reeve begins with a lengthy introduction devoted to major themes, his own translation of Book VI, and a large commentary. Reeve gives us more, providing an analysis of the arguments on the page facing the translation, something not found in the volumes of Clarendon series. It's easy to read a couple of paragraphs of Aristotle, and then see the analysis on the facing page. One has the distinct feeling that if there is anything Reeve doesn't understand about practical wisdom, it isn't worth knowing. Some of my favorite parts are when Reeve connects something in Book VI with other works by Aristotle. You're along finding Reeve saying, "Oh by the way, over here in De Anima (one of the Analytics or one of works on biology) there's a connection with Book VI." Make no mistake, this is a work of scholarship. It is not an introduction. But there's no doubt that Reeve gives us something important and very helpful for Aristotle studies.
