I had such high hopes for A Wicked Thing. I love fairytales. And while I haven't read/watched many fairy-tale retellings, the few ones I've read/watched, I liked (mainly Beastly. I mean the book, of course. The movie sucked and is a travesty). Sleeping Beauty is not my favorite fairy tale, but still all fairy tales are awesome (and I LOVED Maleficent). Add to that the fact that every review I've read of this book keeps saying that it's dark...and I do love dark. And when you add all of those elements up, you're supposed to get something great, right? Wrong. Holy mother of boredom, Batman! How in the world did dark equate boring? Wicked Thing was so, so boring. I don't mind slow pace. I've read my fair share of slow-paced books and some I've loved. But I was bored by everything in A Wicked Thing...even the evil people (and the evil people hardly ever bore me). Aurora was meh. While I do give the author points for trying to make her a stronger female than she has been depicted as of late, her fierceness was boring. Her life was boring. She spends most of the novel locked in her room...that's not interesting. The times she's let out of her room, she's still freaking boring. Such a disappointing character. A Wicked Thing doesn't have a love triangle. What it does have is shadings of a love rectangle...which is new. Usually any sort of romance plot has me wanting to throw myself off the highest tower, but I didn't hate this one. Why? Because, again, I didn't give a crap. I couldn't even muster the energy to hate the romance. All I kept thinking was "Soon. It'll all be over soon." Oh, and dudes 1-3 were also snooze-worthy. Nothing bothers me more than when a book that's going to be part of a series suffers from the lack of an ending. Why spend all of this time trying to build up a story to then say, "nah, I'll finish it in the next book?" Take a page out of the Harry Potter books. J.K. Rowling had a full fledged, seven story arc to tell, yet she still managed to make each book a story in its own right. And a story needs an ending. The HP books had endings. A Wicked Thing? Not so much. It's apparently supposed to get meatier in Book 2. But here's the thing... I'm not planning on reading Book 2. So, I got stuck with a boring book that on top of that suffers from no ending, making it seem like an even bigger waste of time. So, I do not recommend A Wicked Thing. It's not getting one star because that's now reserved for books I (for lack of a better word) hate. And I didn't hate A Wicked Thing (maybe it would have been more interesting to me if I did). I just didn't care one whit about anyone or anything. Two stars for a somewhat strong heroine and for good use of language. Great feminist fiction: A WICKED THING by Rhiannon Thomas By Teen Reads Now this was a pleasant surprise. I’m not going to lie --- after seeing the cover of A WICKED THING and reading the back, I was convinced I was going to encounter yet another derivative YA fairy tale adaptation. However, I was proven wrong, and never did that feel so good! Thomas’ novel takes place in a vaguely European medieval kingdom where Princess Aurora has just awoken after her century long sleep. She finds that her destiny has been foretold in tapestries and storybooks in all the years preceding, and she has a long list of expectations set before her that she must fulfill to bring peace to the kingdom of Alyssinia. But it is quickly revealed that absolutely nothing is as it seems, and beneath the poised, polite exteriors of King John and Queen Iris and all those that follow them, lurks sinister tyranny and
sparks of rebellion that could throw the whole world into chaos. Aurora is betrothed to her prophesized “true love” Prince Rodric, a meek but kind-hearted young man who slowly reveals that he too feels trapped and bound by his circumstances. But Aurora does not, in fact, love her supposed true love, especially when you throw in a rascally inn boy named Tristan and a conniving but strong-willed prince from a neighboring kingdom. However, do not think for one second that this becomes a story of love and decisions that only have to deal with men and romance. I’ll just cut right to the chase ---- this story was unabashedly feminist, and thank God for that, for it is wonderful. Throughout the novel, Thomas expertly captures the pressures women face to constantly maintain perfection and beauty and the feeling that women have no agency or control in their lives. Watching Aurora stumble through the haze of waking up 100 years into the future and blossom into a realistic feminist heroine left me cheering as each page turned. Now I will say that the writing itself as an isolated component was good, not spectacular. It was like a Sedan: it was reliable, sturdy, effective and it got you where you needed to go. The main power lay in the story and the message, and boy did Thomas hit those right out of the park. Really, just soaring home runs. Though I’m a bit too old for the intended audience of this book, I still found myself enraptured in the gender politics constantly at play in the narrative, both on the surface and buried deep in the subtext. And I’m glad that the intended audience is younger women, because young girls need characters like Aurora. She’s not a superhero, and I say that meaning she has relatable power. She’s the kind of role model young girls should have because she’s just like them. She may be scared and confused and overwhelmed, but she is not afraid to seize the moment when the time comes, and this version of Aurora will inspire young girls to seize the moment, too. I admired Thomas for not lingering on teen love and for really not tying Aurora down to the expected necessity of having a love interest. It was yet another refreshing component to this novel. I admit the pace was quite slow at first, and it wasn’t until a third of the way in that I became fully invested, but that didn’t turn out to be a huge problem. I enjoyed the characters, even though there were times that Thomas seemed to dip a little into stereotypes for the lesser roles. Rodric is also a relatable character for young men, especially those who also feel lost and confused. I hope that young men will read this book too so they can be inspired by Rodric’s journey and, of course, support women like Aurora. Finnegan, the foreign prince, was devious and dynamic without overdoing it, and it was nice to see an author not fall into the bad boy trap. Also, the fact that the kingdom was named after a woman who was a great queen gave me some feminist feels. All in all, this book was such a pleasant surprise, and it stoked a great warm fire of hope inside of me that young girls will have access to great feminist fiction. I cheer for you, Aurora, and I am honestly excited for the next book, and I cheer for you, Rhiannon Thomas, for writing great feminism in one of the most unexpected places. WICKED THING breaths a whole new version of the classic fairytale we've all seen and love, of the enchanted Princess Aurora, better known as THE SLEEPING BEAUTY... I've been DYING to read A WICKED THING since seeing that GORGEOUS cover that HaperTeen brilliantly came up with. I didn't even know what it was about before I instantly added it to my TBR pile, then when I read the synopsis I was sold. I LOVE retellings, especially ones with my favorite Disney Princess. So I was ecstatic when I received an ARC for review. But I did have my issues with A WICKED THING. It was very slow paced, I mean VERY!! It dragged almost throughout the whole book, and didn't have any action except the last chapter or so. I guess I just expected, or wanted more from A WICKED THING then what I got. And we had this weird love square type thing going on that just did not fit well with the story at all. Though I did like each of the three guys Aurora was entangled with, but not all of them as a love interest. If that makes any since...lol!! But I can sometimes put up with a good love triangle if it's done well, but I can't do a love square, that's just too much! But to be technical, Aurora really wasn't involved with all of them, but the attraction was evident with each guy. I really hope in the next book Thomas narrows them down to just one love interest, because I can't keep reading with all these guys on one girl!!! THE PLOT 102 YEARS INTO THE PAST... (PAST TIME) Once upon a time, in a far away land, their lived the peaceful kingdom of Alyssinia, that unknowingly was about to have their world ripped out from under them. One glorious day, the rulers of this land were blessed with a beautiful baby girl that they named Princess Aurora. The kingdom rejoiced and welcomed their precious princess into the world. But as fate would have it, the wicked witch received news of this baby's birth, and the grand three day and three night of celebrations that she was purposely uninvited too. Furious, the wicked witch vowed vengeance and made it her sole mission to destroy the king and queen by striking them where it hurts worst-cursing their only child to an indefinite sleeping slumber after she pricks her finger on a spindle of a spinning wheel.... The King and Queen tried everything in their power to find the witch and force her to break the wretched curse, but to no avail, was she ever found. They're only hope now was secluding Princess Aurora from the harsh world and outsiders who could be the witch in disguise. Forcing Aurora to a life of solicitude and imprisonment in her tower, in hopes she'll evade the curse and make it through her eighteenth birthday to best the witch and overcome her wickedness. But the power of the curse was more then they could have anticipated, and on the night before her eighteenth birthday she was bewitched by a melody that enchanted her and lured her to the waiting spinning wheel where she pricked her finger on the spindle and inadvertently drained the land of magic, and ended the life she once knew. But more horrifying, she was immobilize in a slumber, until if the prophecy is to be believed, she will be awoken by the kiss of true love... and then the reawakened Princess will breath magic and life back to the miserable land that once flourished and prospered, and all will be glorious once more and they will live happily ever after... Or so, that's the way The Sleeping Beauty story was told...
102 YEARS INTO THE FUTURE... (PRESENT TIME) Princess Aurora wakes from her slumber 102 years into the future to a kiss from a timid, but sweet Prince Rodric, and realizes life as she knew it passed her by while she slept on. Alone, confused, and helpless in this new world, Princess Aurora reluctantly stays with the new king and queen and their son, the Prince that awoken her. But Aurora quickly finds she's a pawn in this wicked game to keep the people of Alyssinia happy and continent with a dream she's suppose to portray, but unable to fulfill. She's to become this Princess they've all read about in fairytales, to become someone or something she is not. But with little power and no say, Aurora has no choice but to do as she's told and marry the Prince of Alyssinia and become this savior that she feels she isn't capable of... But all that changes when Aurora is finally pushed to the breaking point and is caught up in conspiracies and murder plots that threaten not only Alyssinia, but her very life... She's tired of the games and is ready to stand up for herself and the people of Alyssinia and is ready to make her first rebellious move against the crown, and set the kingdom on fire... Overall, A WICKED THING was not what I thought it would be, and very slow paced with hardly any action. But had a lot of drama and court intrigue, which I love in books. So I guess it kinda evened itself out, and though A WICKED THING was not what I thought it would be and definitely not as good as I hoped, it still turned out to be a pretty okay book that fiercely caught my interest near the end. I'll definitely be reading the sequel to see what's in store for Aurora, because that ending was pretty amazing, with it all coming to a head, and a cliffhanger that has me wanting more!!!
