Martinez-Ybor Alfonsina Storni (1892-1938) is a romantically austere poet, demonstrably as beautiful in English, as in this translation, as she is in Spanish. It has not been long since I first became acquainted with her work, but she grows on one. Feeling is conveyed more often through imagery than wordmeaning, and many times, remains evanescent, like a sigh. Whether up close or panoramas, invariably the picture is gray, the emotion intimated, even constricted. In "Mask and Clover" one senses an intense capacity, indeed desire, longing for something, perhaps love, yet remains stoic, silent, never sentimental, never does it sound fulfilled. As a bilingual person I treasure this translation as it has introduced me to Alfonsina Storni in the original, as well as to the unfailingly poetic voice that reveals her work in English. It is no small feat, as the Spanish is not simple; though not using "lunfardo" nonetheless it is far from academic, modernistic in usage, it does not
escape the porteño cadences that are not easy to convey. To my knowledge, Mr. Masse is not a published poet in his own right though undoubtedly here he is one, if once removed.
