Just as good as the first! By Sash & Em: A Tale of Two Bookies Oh, TOM RAINES - what have you done to me? You make me crazy - between acting like the immature 15 that you are and coming to realizations that I wish you had come to way earlier - I still find myself absolutely loving you. I loved Vortex just as much as I loved Insignia. All of the things that I enjoyed in Insignia were in Vortex - moments of hilarity (I lost count of how many times I laughed out loud), action action action! (the Simulations!), and cut-throat politicking (BUT FOR REAL). Each of the characters grow in their own way and some of them will surprise you with what they do - my jaw dropped a few times from the "WHAT?!". There came a point in the book, about half way, when I could definitely see a place where it would have been an okay place to stop but I'm so glad that there was more! I love that these books are 400+ pages - it really gives me a chance to dig in and spend time with the characters. My favorite thing about this serious is how it explores friendships - all kinds of friendships. The friendship between Wyatt and Tom (girl and boy), Vik and Tom (boy and boy), Yuri and the group (an "outsider"), Medusa and Tom (opposing sides of the war and opposite sides of the world, AND they've never met in real life). How do "prioritize your friends, which ones would you try to save, and how far would you be willing to go? Would you commit treason? Would you betray them to make life better for yourself? And if you were the one betrayed, would you ever forgive them? It has been a little over a year since I read Insignia and I couldn't remember everything that happened in the first book but Vortex does a good job of hitting key points from Insignia in a way that doesn't feel awkward. I wish I had re-read Insignia before starting Vortex but it didn't spoil anything for me. If you're looking for a series for a boy to get in to, this is the one. Vortex -A Fantastic Continuation By Michelle @ In Libris Veritas Insignia was one of my favorite reads for the year so I was super excited to read Vortex when I won it...of course life and review books happen so it kept getting pushed back. Until I recommend Insignia to my boyfriend and he blazed through it and forced begged me to read Vortex with him. I want to touch on the fact that my boyfriend doesn't like reading...in fact if he reads 1 book in a year it's something worth noting, so the fact that he's read both of these books back to back says something about it. It's just that good. I have no clue where to even start with Vortex, because it's one those books where I just want to squeal and thrust the book at your face until you decide to read it...just to shut me up. Vortex is just as much fun as Insignia was, in fact it may be more fun. We get to see more of the Spire and more of the awesome technology everyone has access to, and we get to see more simulated battles...which I think might be my favorite techy aspect. Just the thought of being able to pop into

a simulated situation and `live' it like it's truly real makes me want to tell scientists they need to hurry up. Of course there are downsides to technology and while we got to see some of it in Insignia we really get to see it in Vortex. We also get to see more of the Camelot Company combatants at work and we are introduced to a whole new host of people. Tom is just as stubborn, reckless, and hilarious as before but I'm happy to say he experiences a lot of growth in this one. Tom is the kind of character that gives you a headache because you get hitting your forehead over the stupid stuff he says and does. I can't even remember how many times I yelled, "Tom just shut up!" Needless to say he `kind of' learned to shut up before I gave myself a concussion. Vik, Wyatt, and Yuri are also back! These four go through some tough situations together and I really love the strength of their friendships, even with all the name calling and crazy problems. Then there is Medusa. God I love this girl! She's such a tough character with a vulnerability that she tries to hid underneath all of that cool badassery. We do get to learn a bit more about her and even with her flaws displayed she never becomes a puddle of goo. There is just so much I want to tell you guys about, but there would be so many spoilers that the review would be pointless. Needless to say I'll be buying the third book when it comes out, even though we have quite the wait. If you haven't read Insignia and you enjoy sci-fi books with awesome tech then I really recommend it! 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. 3.5 -- Not quite as good as Insignia By KVB99 We're back at the Pentagonal Spire with Tom Raines and his primary friends: Vik, Wyatt and Yuri. The story is set in future surveillance society ultimately run by big corporations. Tom once again struggles to fit in and keep his secret about his special digital abilities. The first half of the book has little plot movement. The story mostly revolves around day to day life at the Pentagonal Spire, focusing on buddy bonding moments and lively banter. I found the first half a little slow and I almost put the book down. The humor was hit and miss IMO. The second half or so of the book the story picks up momentum, probably no coincidence that Medusa begins to play a real role in the story again. The ending is pretty fast paced and very good, as Tom has another showdown with Vengerov and another defining moment with Medusa. I gave Insignia 4 stars and I'd be there too for this book, but for the slow first half. Also, there's an ugly murder near the end of the book that seems discordant and out of place in this story. I'll give book 3 a try. See all 46 customer reviews...
