Okay book, but if you're looking for "steps" on how to get over betrayal, this is not it By Dallas_Dog_Owner I read this short book and found it kind of all over the place. Revenge is good. Revenge is bad. Revenge can be good, if it stops harm. Or maybe though, revenge will just make you feel worse. Which is it? Well, it depends on which chapter of the book you are reading. As Amazon reviewer Beth Smith said, the book is heavily anecdotal, so how effective or desirable revenge (or no revenge) will be seems to depend on each individual case. Moreover, there are all types of "revenge," but again, the "best" revenge--if any--apparently depends on the unique circumstances of the betrayal. Me, I was hoping--having been nastily betrayed by a couple of people in recent years--to pin down a set of "steps" or a plan for working through feelings of anger, wanting revenge, etc. Unfortunately, while Dr. Laura makes some good points in the book--for example, that the time you spend being angry and bitter toward your betrayer can negatively impact not only you but the ones you love--she simply does not provide a consistent, practical set of guidelines for dealing with betrayal. So 3 stars is being charitable, I think. Frankly, Dr. Laura's book seemed less like a helpful "how to" guide than like a "stream of
consciousness" exercise in expressing (1) her frustration with her many years of feeling betrayed by colleagues, supposed friends, etc. , and (2) the things she's been doing to get beyond this frustration. 14 of 15 people found the following review helpful. A MUST READ By starlinechix I just got this book and have already read it twice. For anyone dealing with a "shark" it helps you deal and realize there are just plain evil people out there that do not and will not accept that what they are doing is wrong and so very hurtful. It has made me look at myself and how I have let this woman torment me for almost 20 years. I could never understand why family would not stand up to her and seemed to accept her lies as gospel but now I do. Quotes are the Best Part By Beth Smith The quotes in the chapter bylines are the best part of this book. I like Dr. Laura, listen often to her show, and have read other of her excellent books. This fell far short of what I was expecting or hoping to get out of her book. It is mostly anecdotal in nature without any real deep analysis of how to handle betrayal. She does give some of her personal experiences, but in the end, I was shocked to see that her final reaction is "I don't give a damn." That really surprised me because that reaction means you still really do care. I also just read "Unbroken", a true story by Laura Hillenbrand about an American POW in Japan during WW II. Now that is a book that deals with overcoming betrayal. "Unbroken" made me feel deep contemplation. After breezing through Dr. Laura's short and uninspiring book, I feel like I sat down to the dinner table and was served cotton candy. Unsatisfied, disappointed, cheated. The 2 books are about the same in price. "Unbroken" will actually give you some tools to deal with betrayal and some real inspiration for dealing with betrayal, disappointment, and difficult times.
