Just the Essentials By James Dauray This textbook is very much intended for an environmental science course that whisks students through some of the most essential concepts without dwelling too long on any. There are pros and cons to this approach. On one hand, the students do get a wide exposure to the entire discipline. This textbook is more comprehensive than most in terms of the number of topics and issues addressed. However, the relative lack of depth makes me question how much of the material will reside in the students' long term memories once the course is over. Cunningham does provide an ancillary website to accompany this text, with links throughout to expand on some of the ideas. However, my experience is that students will very rarely take advantage of these resources unless their instructor specifically assigns them. The irony here is that the textbook will likely have very little appeal to the non-science majors that are most likely to take a course that would adopt the book. Part of the textbook's title is "Inquiry and Applications." There are very few actual opportunities for inquiry in this text, rather, the author depends on presenting data sets or local scenarios that aren't likely to catch a student's attention. For example, the chapter on waste provides a page discussing the approach different countries take to recycling. While this is important, a detailed, personal narrative about the Love Canal, Khian Sea incident, or the E-Waste cities in China would provide a much better context for the importance of the chapter. Instructors will likely have to find their own sources of inquiry and application. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Principles of Environmental Science By MatureStudent This book arrived by the time specified and was in excellent condition. I am returnig to the classroom after 30 years and was quite anxious about taking a science course. The chapter concepts were covered in such a way that I found the subject matter easy to follow and understand. I would certainly recommend this book to others studying this topic. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I mean for a text book By J. D. Seward Some of the lines are blurry, it's kind of hard to read the key terms when it is like that. I really do not understand why there are blurry lines of text, for something that i paid for this is exremly frustrating. Otherwise, it's a textbook, what else more is there to say?
