From School Library Journal Gr 3–7—Riordan takes the classic guide to Greek myths and makes it his own, with an introduction and narration by beloved character Percy Jackson. With 19 chapters, this oversize hardcover includes a variety of stories, from the early tales of Gaea and the Titans to individual tales of gods readers encounter in the "Percy Jackson" series (Hyperion), such as Ares, Apollo, and Dionysus. Percy's irreverent voice is evident from titles such as "Hera Gets a Little Cuckoo," "Zeus Kills Everyone," and "Artemis Unleashes the Death Pig," and the stories are told in his voice with his distinctive perspective ("Another guy who got a special punishment was Sisyphus. With a name like Sissy-Fuss you have to figure the guy had issues…"). The format and illustrations are fairly traditional, considering the tone, featuring painterly depictions of the gods and their world. While these are actual tales of Greek mythology, Percy's take adds more color than would be helpful for those working on research projects or reports. The stories do make for fun reading, however, and might work as starting points for schoolwork. This original and wildly entertaining spin on Greek mythology is bound to be popular among fans of the series.—Heather Talty, formerly at Columbia Grammar & Preparatory School, New York City Review "Combining the sarcasm and wit of Percy Jackson with the original Greek myths is a great way to hook tweens and teens on the stories without boring them. The beautiful illustrations by John Rocco enhance each story. . ."?VOYA "Percy's gift, which is no great secret, is to breathe new life into the gods. Closest attention is paid to the Olympians, but Riordan has a sure touch when it comes to fitting much into a small space-as does Rocco's artwork, which smokes and writhes on the page as if hit by lightning. . .The inevitable go-to for Percy's legions of fans who want the stories behind his stories."?Kirkus Reviews "The age-old stories are endlessly strong, resonant, and surprising, while the telling here is fresh, irreverent, and amusing. Percy's voice. . . John Rocco illustrates the myths with drama, verve, and clarity. A must-have addition to the Percy Jackson canon."?Booklist Online About the Author

A publisher in New York asked me to write down what I know about the Greek gods, and I was like, Can we do this anonymously? Because I don't need the Olympians mad at me again. But if it helps you to know your Greek gods, and survive an encounter with them if they ever show up in your face, then I guess writing all this down will be my good deed for the week. So begins Percy Jackson's Greek Gods, in which the son of Poseidon adds his own magic--and sarcastic asides--to the classics. He explains how the world was created, then gives readers his personal take on a who's who of ancients, from Apollo to Zeus. Percy does not hold back. "If you like horror shows, blood baths, lying, stealing, backstabbing, and cannibalism, then read on, because it definitely was a Golden Age for all that." This novel-sized paperback, complete with an insert of full-color illustrations by Caldecott Honoree John Rocco, is portable and friendly, and the ideal way to introduce young readers to the classic stories. It was filled with all of the familiar elements of the Greek mythology, but with the hilarious Percy Jackson narrating, it's stuffed to the rim with modern and funny comments and side notes to keep up the interesting factor up a through the whole book. I actually was a little sceptical about downloading it because I know all the myths by Heart. But this book tells them in a completely different view. So even if you know all of the myths, this book will tell them in a completely new way. I recommend this book wholeheartedly for any fantasy fan. P. S. I say don't listen to the haters at all P. P. S. This is a review by a 10 year old, so you know that I told the absolute truth I swear by the river Styx ( it's the best oath that you can make, so you can't break it)

John Rocco’s illustrations are breathtaking and the book is so professionally done that it could easily become a coffee table book that even adults would be proud to present. Of course, that leads to the next issue, this book while gorgeous, is gargantuan. This is not the type of book that someone should or even could bring on a vacation to read by the beach, instead this is a book that you read inside while it’s propped up or laid down on a table to help support the weight. Now that said, the e-book version which is easy to transport does include the gorgeous illustrations in color (if you have an e-reader or ipad that displays in color). So if you’re insistent on bringing this book to the beach then there is an available option. As for the content, Riordan has done a fantastic job, this book contains the quick wit and entertaining tone that readers have come to expect from Percy Jackson, while at the same time it does an amazing job of presenting the Greek myths in a fashion to rival Edith Hamilton’s Mythology. All in all if you’re a fan of Rick Riordan or want to learn about Greek Myths from an entertaining source then this is the book for you. Personally I think this is a book for all ages, and I whole heartedly recommend it. http://whatchamacallitreviews.blogspot.com/2014/08/percy-jacksons-greek-gods-by-rick.html 23 of 26 people found the following review helpful. Beautifully ilustrated and full of wit this is a wonderful read! By Liat2768 The Lightning Thief sparked an interest in Greek Mythology in both my kids and they checked out many books on the subject from the library. However, more often than not the dry style of writing did not appeal to my younger son. He did work his way through some of the books but this was more out of curiosity about the material covered by Riordan than an avid love of the subject matter. He got this book yesterday and, except for an enforced night's sleep, hasn't surfaced from it for hours! This is not a light book but he has been lugging it around everywhere with him! This book is utterly irreverent and hilarious and is filled with Percy's signature wit. The larger details of the myths are all there but they are tweaked more than a little and written with the humor of a modern child, For example, the story of Hestia is titled 'Hestia chooses Bachelor Number Zero' and one of the quotes from Zeus is "Both of these fine gods want to marry you. Because I am a stand-up king and all-around thoughtful dude, I will let you pick. Bachelor Number One. Poseidon, likes long walks on the beach and scuba diving. Bachelor Number two, Apollo, enjoys music and poetry and spends his free time reading prophecies at the Oracle of Delphi. Which do you like better?" or try this line "You can't swing a cat in Ancient Greece without hitting one of Zeus' ex-girlfriends." Or just have a quick look at the Table of contents with chapters titled "The Olympians bash some heads" or 'Demeter turns into grainzilla"!

The book is not lacking in text and is a good read for an advanced elementary reader. The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous but only appear occasionally making this a good solid read. This is a wonderful expansion on the Percy Jackson series and I hope it will encourage an interest in mythology in my young readers. Update: Two days after writing this review we made a trip to our local library and the child brought home an armful of the Myth-o-mania series, a comic book version of the Odyssey and D'Aulaire's book on Greek Myths! I couldn't be more pleased! See all 711 customer reviews...
