A Useful Manual for Phytoplankton By David B Richman There are relatively few books on identifying marine phytoplankton and most are really dated or are part of larger publications, such as the Schmidt Atlas of diatoms. These are not easily usable. It is thus a happy circumstance to find a manageable book that addresses this need. "Identifying Marine Phytoplankton" by Carmelo R. Tomas is just such a book. While it of course does not include the non-planktonic forms, it is very thorough in its coverage of planktonic genera and species. Fully 380 of the 858 pages are devoted to diatoms, with the last chapters covering dinoflagellates, marine flagellates and coccolithophorids. Originally published in two volumes, the current compendium is likely to be a standard for some years to comec 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Very comprehensive and descriptive regarding details used for taxonomic distinction and identification - methods for microscopic examination, collection, culture, cell structure detail, nomenclature. I am very pleased to have made the purchase - the text contains a lot of information not normally encountered in one source and provides for an enjoyable read - smooth, organized, easily followed.
