While I like the series fine By Jane Mars I'm assuming most of the people commenting and rating this highly don't know much about the history of the Holocaust in Poland. While I like the series fine, this book twists the historical timeline
incredibly. The children in August 1944 recall the Nazi invasion the year before? In 1943? Four years after the actual invasion? By 1943, we are a year past the deportation of the Jews of Warsaw to Treblinka. By the time she has Poland invaded by the Nazis, the Warsaw Ghetto uprising has already happened. Virtually every other ghetto in Eastern Europe has already been sent to its death by the summer of 1943. The children's father, if he'd managed to miraculously survived, would not be wondering if they could just comply with the Nazi invaders and survive--the answer would have been blisteringly obvious. By 1944, when the children are still alive, there was only one ghetto left really, and that was Lodz, and the 70000 survivors there were on the verge of deportation to Auschwitz themselves. I guess she had to make it 1944, so the Russians would show up and save everyone, but realistically, the timeline here is just unbelievably awful in light of the real timeline of the Holocaust. If you want to hand your child a book about the Holocaust that isn't too distressing, don't go with this one. It's dreadful. Go with one of the classics like "When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit" or "The Upstairs Room" or "Number the Stars." 6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A Wonderful History Lesson for Children By Janne Seal As we move farther and farther away from the horrors of World War II, it's vital that our children learn from history if we're going to prevent the atrocities from happening again. This book brings the War to life without scaring children, and leads to in-depth discussions. It's perfect for grandparents who are only a generation removed, as they share history with the next generation. 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. LOVED THIS BOOK By Greyson Ragone I would give this a five star without even thinking about it. It is an amazing book and teaches yes a little bit about the Nazi invasion See all 203 customer reviews...
