instructor out there, you should check out this book, because the chapter assignments are brilliant from a teaching stand point. They force the user to really explore how GIS is used in the world today and look beyond the simple tutorial commands to introduce you to the software. The assignments make you explore the internet for data and learn how GIS is being used elsewhere. By far the best GIS book I've used sofar. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Useful Tutorial for those New to the Subject and ArcGIS Software By Mark R. Jorgensen To those of us who buy and use ESRI Press books Kurland and Gorr are a familiar duo of authors. This book follows the template for other such tutorials on various subjects. I have worked through some of the other books and find that this one follows the same pattern. It has abundant step-bystep instructions and screen shots which will be helpful to those new to mapping and the ArcGIS software. The more advanced users will also find good ideas for their own health-related projects and maps. The other reviewer is correct about recent difficulties in downloading/installing the free ArcGIS software. It took me several e-mails and a couple of months before I received a DVD with the ArcGIS software. The initial online download and install was a botched mess so I requested the DVD. Eventually ESRI customer support seemed to figure out that there was a systemic problem in this area (was it just for this book?) but it did take them some weeks. This was an aberration as most of my experiences with ESRI customer support have been positive over the last five years. I believe that in some of the more advanced subjects covered by the book the explanation should have been a bit clearer. The authors, who know their software very well, and the in-house reviewers during the pre-publication process, forget that many of the readers will not have that same level of taken-for-granted knowledge -- it is what I term the usability perspective. Still, considering all criteria this book is another fine addition to the ESRI tutorials. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. a very good introduction By Epiman This book is a workbook that guides the user through the functionality of Arcgis. The examples are clear. The only thing that I suggest is that in order to use this workbook for a course, there should be some time devoted by the instructor to lecturing about other aspects of GIS.
