Beautiful writing couldn't save it By Krista It took me several days to congeal my thoughts about Ignite Me into something that I could actually put into words. My review that follows is not one I normally would write, in that, it’s rife with spoilers. I do apologize for that. To be honest, the writing of this review is going to be somewhat cathartic for me, and I’m sorry that you who haven’t read it yet, are on the receiving end of my word vomit. I will say that Tahereh Mafi is an absolutely beautiful writer. It flows and ebbs like water and she has the ability to elicit real emotion from me without much apparent effort. Her use of symbolism is unmatched. And, something new that I discovered about her – this woman knows how to write romance. Face-fanning, lady-bit tingling, jelly-legged romance. It’s good stuff. And, seriously, the covers of all her books in the Shatter Me series are orgasms for my eyes. They are the most beautiful series covers I’ve ever seen. So, on to the spoilers. If you haven’t read Ignite Me, you will want to stop now. Seriously – stop reading if you don’t want to know who Juliette picked. Last warning. My feelings on whether I “liked” or “did not like” Ignite Me are not wrapped up in whether my team won or lost. It’s not nearly as simplistic as that, although some might dispute that. Certainly, I’ll be the first one to admit that I wish Juliette had chosen the other guy, and that fact does color my overall opinion of the book to some degree. How could it not? We, as book fans, become so involved in our favorite characters’ lives that we create Twitter handles and websites dedicated to them. We passionately advocate for our favorite crushes and couples in tournaments and create badges and buttons announcing our allegiances for our blogs and Facebook pages. Of course the outcome of love triangles are going to affect our overall impressions of the books in which they are found, and there is nothing wrong with that. I have always said that the worst way out of a love triangle is to kill off one of the choices. And, I realized after finishing Ignite Me that that is exactly what Mafi did here. Granted, both Adam and Warner were physically alive in the end. But, all the qualities that made up the Adam that was introduced to us in Shatter Me died a fiery, horrible death over the course of this 408-page book, and frankly, it makes me more angry than anything else.

Adam captured my heart from the very beginning. The story of how this boy helped this girl and became her only friend when no one else would dare brought tears to my eyes. Then, after spending years trying to find her, he risks everything to free her from both her physical and mental prison. He loved her practically his whole life, and the greatest gift was when he heard that her love was returned. He naturally wanted to protect her from all the bad scary things (love kinda makes you want to do that), but he also believed that she could be so much more. That man was nowhere to be found in Ignite Me. I appreciate that Juliette wanted to stop hiding and start living. But, didn’t she do that the second she jumped out of her bedroom window with Adam? Wasn’t she standing up for herself when she pointed that gun in Kenji’s face while in Adam’s apartment? Didn’t she take charge of her life when she made the decision to take Adam and James to Omega Point in the first place? And, didn’t Adam support her and go along with it all? The Adam that was presented to us in Ignite Me was bitter, cold and hateful. He was indecisive and angry. It was almost as if Mafi was trying to force her choice down my throat. I hate to break it to her, but I could’ve gotten behind her decision to put Juliette with Warner if she had given me a good reason why. But, vilifying and demonizing Adam in order to paint a more radical contrast between he and the now angelic Warner felt so wrong to me. If two characters are going to completely switch personalities over the course of a series, I want a solid reason why, and unrequited love isn’t one. Not for these two guys. In the end, I just didn’t believe any of it. Sadly, if you put all the relationship drama aside, there isn’t much left in Ignite Me. Whereas Shatter Me and Unravel Me focused a lot on the development of Juliette’s powers and how they might take down the Reestablishment, Ignite Me was all angst and guilt and hormones. There was very little said about Juliette’s, Warner’s and Adam’s powers, and almost nothing about the secondary characters’ powers (so little, in fact, that I forgot what they were until about 85% through). All three books were leading up to the final showdown between Juliette and Anderson. We didn’t even see Anderson until the final pages of the book. And, then it was over. Just like that. All the waiting and anticipation was over so fast, and I literally said out loud, “So, that’s it then?” I wanted so much more! I wanted to know what was beyond Sector 45 and how the destruction of it and Anderson was going to affect the rest of the country. Is there even a country? What does the world look like? The world-building has always been a little weak for my liking, and I was thinking we’d finally fill in those holes in Ignite Me. Not so. Now that it’s all said and done and I’ve had some time to reflect on my true feelings regarding Ignite Me, I realize that I just feel cheated. What I thought was the whole point (taking down the leader of the regime that has been oppressing people for years) ended up being buried amid the unrealistic destruction of one character loved by many and the unbelievable elevation of another to one who could do absolutely nothing wrong. The shaping of Juliette’s budding abilities and personality was squashed by her constant indecision in the “I love him, I love him not” game.

Most disappointing series finale I've read in a long time By Sara @ Forever 17 Books SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS Ignite Me was a series finale I was anxious and nervous for. For one, Shatter Me has been one of my favorite series thus far, with its poetic and beautiful writing and complex and interesting characters. The nerves stemmed from a combination of fear of the massive love triangle that developed in the sequel, Unravel Me, and from numerous recent series finales that left me a little disappointed. I was leery of where this one would fit but I put my big girl panties on and jumped in with two feet on the day of release. I should start out by saying I was a firm Team Adam supporter heading in. I found him protective and swoony in Shatter Me and he broke my heart in Unravel Me, but I had faith, despite the novella, Fracture Me. One has to hold onto hope sometimes, right? I was not a fan of that novella. It felt pointless, like just a rehashing of previous events, with no real substance. I guess novellas are supposed to be that way sometimes? I don’t know. I don’t really care for them in general and make it a habit of skipping them completely. But it felt just thrown together and then showed us a small piece of an Adam I didn’t recognize. But again, I had faith in my boy that he was just going through a hard time and Tahereh Mafi was trying to throw us off. I regretted reading it but in the scheme of things, it’s probably best I did or the Adam she created in Ignite Me would have surprised me even more so than it did. If it was unclear the direction the love triangle was going to take heading in, it was immediately cleared up within the first few chapters. How so? Well, we spend the first approximately 15% of the book changing everything I enjoyed about Warner’s character. Every bad thing he did to Juliette in the previous books or that upset her was explained away into being untrue with excuse after excuse. Locking her up for future use as a weapon? Oh he was just following orders and studying her to try to help his sick mother. Making her hurt a child? Oh that didn’t really happen, it was a simulation chamber. He was trying to get her angry and find her strength to fight back and use her powers. That soldier he shot? He was a wife and child beater so it is totally fine. It left me thinking one word – convenient. Just the whole manner of how it was revealed to Juliette didn’t sit right with me. The only thing that he seemed to really be responsible for was trying to kill her best friend and boyfriend at the time. But in the end it didn’t seem to bother Juliette much. I’m all for bad guys turning it around and turning into the good guy but being the villain was what made Warner so great! He was so complex and interesting that way! I didn’t care for this Warner like I did before. I would have rathered he stayed that way and Mafi found a way to still get these two to move past all of that and find love. The next like 50% of the book then gave Adam a complete personality transplant. Adam became so upset with Juliette, and honestly, some of that anger was justified and warranted, to a degree. She threw him aside for his own good and moved on with his brother, the one person he hated more than his father. He overreacted something fierce though. We got chapter after chapter of him yelling at her, rehashing the same argument over and over, each one getting worse than the previous. It was repetitive and beyond ridiculous how far it went. Who was this Adam? I had never met him before because this was not the Adam I fell in love with. I know people sometimes change

or become different version of themselves than we thought they were, especially in relationships, but this was overkill. Was Mafi trying to overcompensate for something? There was no reason for this to go on and on and to the extent it did to explain away why Warner was in and Adam was out. I’m not sure if Mafi thought that these role reversals and personality changes would happily sway Team Adam supporters to switch sides easily but if that was her intentions it failed miserably, in my opinion. Maybe she was just trying to make Juliette’s decision easier. My complete upset was not based on which guy won out in the end, it was how she chose to get us there. It was insulting and felt like a slap in the face as an Adam fan. In fact, what probably got my blood boiling the most was how Juliette then used Adam’s new behavior to rationalize that she never loved Adam in the first place. He was just the first person to show an interest in her that she could touch. There was never a connection to him. The connection to Adam stemmed from Warner. Wow. So glad that little bit I could hold onto from Shatter Me was so easily dismissed and taken away from me. And you know what? Adam was never given a chance to redeem himself. This mean and angry Adam was what we got until the end, the very little bit he played in the book at that point. How disappointing. To wrap up my thoughts on the love triangle, I think I must clear up any notions some might have that I didn’t like this book just because of Adam. Believe me, there have been other series I adored with my guy losing out and I still enjoyed the last novel. In the end, it is probably for the best Juliette moved on. I wouldn’t want Juliette with this Adam either. Nor him with her, for that matter. Adam became someone who was afraid to fight, wanting instead to try to find a way to stay safe with his brother. I understood why he felt this way. But that wasn’t Juliette anymore. She wanted to fight. And Warner was more supportive of that. Warner and Juliette did have some scenes together, eventually, that I enjoyed. Mafi sure can write sexy scenes, I’ll give her that. But spending almost 75% of the book on this love triangle was overkill. I was rolling my eyes, yelling at the book to move on and I even started to skim, which is sad for a series I used to hang onto every word of. It could have been done so much quicker, leaving more room for the final showdown and other issues I was dying to see resolved. And it could have been done with more respect to the characters we grew to love and the passionate fans that stood by them for all of these books. Finally towards the end things started to happen and it picked up for me, getting me excited and out of my foul mood. But it was all so rushed! I had been waiting and waiting for the big reveal to Warner that Adam and James were his brothers and it literally happened and ended within a few pages. That was it. It was basically glossed right over. Warner instantly changed his attitude towards Adam and Adam seemed to almost do the same. *sigh* Juliette developing into the full force of her powers seemed pretty quick too. All of a sudden she was this huge powerhouse that no one could content with. She wanted to switch the soldiers’ allegiance and it happened with one tiny speech and superpower show. Not to mention her newfound desire to run the Reestablishment? Uh huh. Which leads me to the final showdown… that wasn’t. Juliette was a total badass at the end but did Anderson even have any lines, or more than one? And in all honesty, I wanted Warner and Adam to be a part of Anderson’s takedown. After everything that man did to them, they should have been there! Can you imagine if the three of them found a way to work together for it? It would have been epic and that might have really created a bridge between them for the future. I would have loved that. But alas, this was not meant to be. Something else I noticed lacking in this finale was the beautiful writing style that is Mafi’s writing. There were a few passages, mostly later on in the book, but for the most part it wasn’t there. God, I remember soaking in all the beautiful words in Shatter Me and Unravel Me but they were

noticeably absent here.With how the book was so focused on repetitive aspects of the love triangle and rushed through the actual action and excitement, it makes me wonder if Mafi rushed through, or struggled, writing this. It felt so off to me. So just what did I like? Kenji! He stole the show, as usual. Thank god for his humor to lighten things up and make me smile. James was as adorable as ever, the bits and pieces we saw of him. And again, Mafi is spectacular at writing love scenes that cause chills to run down my spine. I hope she writes a romance novel someday, a standalone without a love triangle, preferably. lol I apologize for how ranty and lengthy this review has become. I just… I have a lot of feelings on this book and I needed to get them out so I can have some sort of closure and move on. In fact, I’m not even touching upon a few other issues I had like the world building, my dislike for Juliette, and the lack of use of the Omega Point characters. But I’m thankful to have had so many fellow readers and bloggers to talk to as I was reading Ignite Me and immediately after. The support in knowing I was not alone in my thoughts, when so many positive reviews were circling, was just what I needed. Okay. Now that I got that out of the way. YOU GUYS. THIS BOOK. It was everything I wanted it to be. I don't even think I'll be as coherent as usual during this review. I'm that worked up over this book. I'm STILL in a glass case of emotion As I mentioned in my review for Into the Still Blue, I have been a little weary of series enders ever since I read Allegiant. I am most happy to say this did not disappoint. Not even a little bit. I loved every. single. minute. of it. So much so that I started reading it at approximately midnight last night, and stayed up until 2:30 to finish it (yes, I read that fast). The story picks up right where Unravel Me left off. I love when books do this. I am not a fan of gaps between stories. I get enough of that on TV (*side-eyes Sherlock*). I want to know everything that happens. Luckily for me, Mafi delivers. I love being inside Juliette's head. Girl is fascinating. She has so many different thoughts running

through her head at one time. One of my favorite things about this series, is that through Mafi's unique writing style, you can really see the growth in Juliette as a person. She started off as completely broken and basically came across as insane in Shatter Me. By the end of Ignite Me, she is a completely different, and amazing, person. I loved seeing her change and develop throughout the series. She really comes in to her own, and develops and OWNS her strength. Just like I'd been wanting her to do. Speaking of character growth and changes, can I just take a minute to discuss Warner? *sigh* I was pretty much Team Warner, even in Shatter Me. I ensconced myself firmly in his camp after reading Destroy Me. Unravel Me kept me there, and Fracture Me just made me really dislike Adam. So yeah, I've always been a fan of Warner. He is such a complex character, and I was more than happy to get to know him even more through the course of Ignite Me. Also, this happens: "Warner Anderson chief commander and regent of Sector 45, son of the supreme commander of The Reestablishment. He has a soft spot for fashion." And I'm jealous of the size of his closet. Oh. And Chapter 55. Better than Chapter 62 from Shatter Me. Hot. One of the biggest questions for the end of the series was who Juliette would end up with. While I won't say whether I was happy or not (thus giving away who she picks), I was at least glad, as Juliette puts it, she wasn't with anyone "by default." Also making an appearance? Our boy Kenji. If she ever decides to continue this series, or do companion novels, or basically anything, I hope Kenji gets to be the focus. I love his character so much. And his friendship with Juliette is absolutely fantastic. It reminds me so much of the friendship between Roar and Aria from the Under the Never Sky series. Right down the the quips and nicknames. I actually laughed out loud a couple of times, I enjoyed them together so much. I love how they are always there for each other, willing to back the other up, and also willing to tell the other when they're being an idiot. Seeing healthy relationships and friendships make me happy. Plus there's lots of great James moments. I love that kid. His interactions with Warner are priceless. I will say there is not a lot of action in this book. At all. It's mostly build up and relationships building between characters, which is totally fine by me. The action that you're expecting, honestly doesn't even happen until you're 90% of the way through the book. Then BAM! It's there. And it goes fast. And then. THEN it's over. I was so ridiculously sad to finish this book. I didn't want it to end. I felt like there could be so much more to this story. I hope one day Tahereh Mafi will want to revisit this world. I love these characters so much (except for maybe Adam...). There's so much more I could say. And want to say. But really, I just want you all to read these books. They're so wonderful and I love them. I hope you will too.
